Windscreen

I am looking to buy a windscreen for my 04 r1150r. Any suggestionson on which one to buy? I am looking for something a little sporty. I like the looks of the BMW Speedster Windshield. Anyone have one?

I added the BMW smoked sport screen on mine last year when the bike was new - BLACK 2004 R/ABS.

I think it really looks great on the bike and works well in terms of fit and finish. But it is minimally effective against the wind.

I am 5'9" and it tends to deflect the wind right at my head.

If you are in need of true wind deflection, I would suggest something larger. If you are wanting to change the appearence towards the sportier look - it's a great option. IMHO.

Givi A750 screen painted to match. I put this on in place of the BMW sport screen since the BMW screen created a LOT of buffeting.

Always a favorite subject. IMHO the BMW sport screen is perfect for the bike. Good enough protection to plus 125mph, and has a very sweet spot at around 95mph.

Noisy, but I wear ear plugs anyway, so no problem. If you want better protection I sugest you look into a R1200RT or a Goldwing.

I'm 5'10". I don't get helmet buffeting.

I agree with socalrob that the sport screen is the best (see link below). I had the touring screen (largest of the three BMW screens) which caused a lot of helmet noise (I'm 6'0"). The sport screen leaves my helmet in clean air. The helmet noise isn't gone, but it's reduced.

This may be more than you are looking for, but my new Aeroflow fairing gives superb protection with NO buffeting

It is as good as the coverage I got on my RT.

Summary: for looks the flyscreen, for wind-protection the biggest monster you can safely mount.

Details: I used the flyscreen, which eliminates pressure on the chest, read I get full blast on the beginning of the neck (I'm 6'1 or 183cm)

My bike came with the Touring screen, of which I don't like the looks. So I then switched to the Sport Screen, which is a bit better, but still doesn't quite cut it: pressure starts approx. at my chin, so ca. 6" or 15cm higher.

While in Germany I discovered Tomflap (http:www.tomflap.com/), which is a little add-on spoiler.

I have it mounted temporarily (you should see the results... true Mickey-Mouse-riggin') and it moves the blast up another 4" (10cm) or so. With some experimenting I may get the wind blast up higher, but that's still a work in progress.

Like many others I use the touring screen in the winter months and the bmw sport screen when it's a little warmer. Both are good at keeping the wind off of the torso, they are both noisy however, at least for a 6 footer. While on the subject does anyone know of an easy way to change these things out? whatever I try it is still a royal pain in the butt.

Does anyone here ride with the BMW R1150R 'High Windshield'? I like they way it looks, and like the way BMW shields and mounting stuctures are designed. Any reviews or opinions?

The A750 gets my vote too.
I think Givi also has an A760 or some such...slightly bigger.

Fallingpines: I just bought the BMW 380mm high windscreen from fly409 and mounted it. I had the sport screen on prior. Loved the sport for commutes and short hops, but found that it just didn't give enough protection from wind/bugs/etc. on long rides. Only did one test ride so far as we still have ice and snow up here. Noticed that the protection is good for chest and helmet, arms still get a fair amount of wind, but that's ok. Test ride at low speed and at 70mph. Again, my review is with only one 20-30 mile ride, so it is what it is.

One thing to think about. I think the engineers made this for shortass germans--I can say this as I am one!! I'm 5' 10" and I think if you are taller you will be subject to dirty air at the top of your helmet (stretched out on the test ride to see where there would be more buffeting.) Also, if you are 6' 2" I think you'd probably hate this screen. If the screen wasn't such a bear to install, I think I'd probably switch back and forth between the sport and the 380. I might still do this, but that depends on my tolerance for frustration and if I can figure out a quick way to install/uninstall. I like the look of the 380 but prefer the look of the speedster.

Last word on this . . . passed on by fly409 and many others on this forum, if you do this install, make sure you've got a set of ball-tip hex wrenches, cover your "beak" with a towel, and take a beer break when you get PO'd.

Later I added a wing tip from Saeng. Looks and works like a laminar lip, it smoothes and quiets the windflow considerably.

Those are fog lights from Wal-Mart. They cost around $15. I drilled a small pilot hole in the bottom of the oil coolers and placed the mounting brackets there. It was easy to wire them directly to the battery - if I knew how to wire in a relay to the ignition I would've done that, but I'm not that smart. I tossed the switch that came with the lights, it's more intended for automotive use anyway, and mounted up a DooDad switch from Aerostich to the handlebars. and pay the consequences with a drained battery.

Being fog lights they don't put out much light, but that wasn't why I mounted them anyway. I wanted to be more visible to oncoming traffic, and in the 15 months or so since I've been using them, I feel like I AM noticed more. I live in a rural area, so I don't deal with a lot of traffic anyway, but I've not had one incident of another vehicle pulling out or turning in front of me with the fog lights on. It just seems that I'm noticed more.

I have a Speedster screen and mount on ebay right now......I ordered the wrong one....I am looking for a 'sport screen'

Hah! So it's your screen that I'll be bidding on!

I have the sport screen, it is great for highway in taking the wind off my chest, but it throws it right into my helmet and is noisey as all hell...

now I want the speedster screen.

I have the Touring screen and also the Fly screen. I think Parkblu's summary is right. They are all compromises -- it is just a matter of where you want the wind to hit you. I am 6'2".

I have also tried the Laminar Lip on my touring screen. For me, it did not work well. It might work for you! Feel free to make me an offer on it (shameless plug).
