Christmas Dinner

What's everyone having? We're doing a little different this year. Christmas eve at my home to open gifts to/from family, I'm making a big pot of dirty rice, the real stuff with chicken livers & gizzards. Christmas day at my Daughter & Son in laws home, they're making shrimp & crabmeat gumbo. They'll probably ask me to smoke up the house and make the roux.

My wife told me we're having my mother-in-law for Christmas dinner.

I'm very disappointed. I wanted turkey.

But seriously, this is what's on our menu - there will be eleven of us sitting down to dinner this year.

Starter:

Scottish smoked salmon
Home-made brown granary bread

Main:

Roast Turkey with truffle stuffing, giblet gravy, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, and pigs in blankets (chipolatas wrapped in bacon)
Roast Potatoes
Roast Parsnips with parmesan
Brussels Sprouts with chestnuts
Carrot & Swede (mashed with butter)
Cauliflower
Broccoli

Pudding:

Christmas Pudding (from Fortnum & Mason in London - grocers to HM Queen Elizabeth)
Sherry Trifle

Should be good. Elaine is a stupendous cook.

You guys have got me drooling on my keyboard! Sounds delicious! Dirty rice and gumbo... Hmmm... Scottish salmon... And I really do love Brussel Sprouts... I have no idea what my wife and I are going to prepare, but you've given me some ideas...

jonathan - if you lived closer, you might have some guests with that meal!

Actually, close to what we have. Like Thanksgiving, turkey with all the trimmings. Plus the serveral dozen Christmas cookies my wife is making as I type!

Jonathan, did you hear about the cannibal that ate his mother-in-law....she STILL disagreed with him !

We're having my wife's whole family over the day after Christmas - about 20 people in all. We're doing 2 huge trays of baked ziti, another one of eggplant rollatini, and the usual platter of sausage and meatballs.

And cannoli of course for dessert.

Lucky me gets lunch at the staff cafeteria....hospitals don't close for Christmas..

...I might have a chocolate Mars bar as a treat for dessert..

Sorry about you guys having to work for Christmas. My sister's a nurse, so we have rearranged holidays so she could join us.

Today we're going down to my mother's to cook & eat my family's version of a traditional Slovak Christmas Eve dinner. Sour mushroom soup, pagacha, pirohi, bobalki, and kolbasi. My daughters are honing their skills at continuing the traditional ethnic cuisine; kind of ironic that the Slovak traditions are being passed down through my mom, who is the English/Irish daughter-in-law.

Tomorrow, we're driving up to my brother-in-law and sister-in-law for a more conventional Christmas dinner: turkey and all the trimmings. I tried to talk her into doing a Turducken (even offered to supply it if she would cook it) but couldn't get her to go along with it. Seems that her daughters are holding out for the traditional family stuffing recipe. Anyway, in either case I don't have to do any dishes!

Going to my sisters house. She's a good cook, and I'm bringing a bottle of wine. What's the deal with all of these new Aussie wines? This one's called 'Penguin'.

Then I get to leave tonight to Florida! I'll be in Orlando for the rest of the week. No, I'm not bringing the bike.
