The Long Way Round - Extended 3 Disc Edition

Post by jonothan »

It was my birthday yesterday and my son bought me The Long Way Round 3 Disc Special Edition.

It's a ten episode edition (rather than six) with loads of new stuff in each episode. There are two episodes (rather than the one) which encompass the planning stages - I've yet to watch the rest.

It really is fabulous and much better than the ordinary series.

Elaine bought me the BMW heated vest for my birthday. I rode out yesterday and though it was only 5°C here in North East Lincolnshire, I was lovely and warm on the first setting.

What a great birthday!

I just rented the first disc (3 Episodes) with the second on the way. I was able to watch only the first episode so far...The planning and then at the end they take off to leave London.

Had no idea there was an extended version available. I was surprised at how well they rode in the training, especially Boorman.

When the new 3 disc version was released here a few weeks ago our local Mag (Aust Motorcycle News) did a revue.

They bagged it something shocking..a whole page saying how bad it is...I couldn't believe it...I'm sure KTM payed them to say it.

Anyway...the latest issue just came out with a comment from a reader...praising the DVD...and in the end saying...

"Please watch the DVD..and..if you are not moved and touched in your biker soul..then you don't have one!"

Well said I thought.

The first release (the two disc set) was what inspired myself and Elaine to learn to ride bikes.

I think that it was after watching this that we were struck by the realisation that there's a whole world out there; that you meet people and strike up conversations when on a motorcycle in a way that you never would if you were in a car. That motorcycling is a skill and a passion that driving isn't (for us, anyway).

Basically, we watched it together and thought we'd like some of that. And that, with our teenagers about to fly the nest, we needed a common interest and passion to help us learn how to become a couple again, if you see what I mean.

I've a lot to thank Mr McGregor and Mr Boorman for.

DJ, I cannot see what is wrong with this new extended edition. Maybe you're right, maybe KTM, embittered and resentful as they must be at their own lack of foresight, did have some influence over what was published! ;) And yes, it not only touched my motorcycle soul but made it blossom. Thanks for the birthday card too! :D

Why surprised?? The video does show how Charlie Boorman had been riding bikes since he was a kid, both on and off-road. :)

Yeah. I got that too. Before viewing the episode, and only having seen bits and pieces on A&E, I just figured these were just two high-profile guys out for some more publicity.

When I saw Charley a few weeks back...he said he was good friends with the great DJ...(David Jefferies)...the fastest TT rider until he died there a few years ago.

Chaley said they were mates and had a racing team together...if he was only half as good as DJ he must be very good.

I think they played down Charleys riding skills as to not make Ewan look too bad in comparison.

Oh..and Jonothan...glad you liked it..

Long way round

Actually DJ I think Charley's involvement with the race team was as a sponsor rather than a rider-----------------------
No matter though, the "Long Way Round" has certainly done a huge amount of good for our cause.
Johnathon, dear boy, many happy returns for the other day!

Thanks Simon..you may be right....yesterday I was checking out how the Dakar thing is going.. http://www.racetodakar.com/

Going by the little vids on that site it looks like he's strugling a bit with the real off road stuff.
