In my heyday.....early sixties, we adapted a Honda 305 cc engine to a go-kart and ran it at the local airport in Guatemala, against Corvettes and other sport cars of the period of the period.......no competition, but we kept bending axles....we just didn't have the current metallurgy available to us.
Now picture a ~300 pound go-kart with a 160 hp, 1000 cc GXXR engine.....can you imagine less than 2 lbs/hp. Notice that it is equipped with sizeable disk brakes on the front wheels too......

My uncle Duke in Terrahote (I know thats no spelled right) Indiana had a serious hobby as a machinist. In the 1960's or 70's he was building carts with twin Maico engines. Had a local kid as a driver. If I remember right he used a solid axle w/ two sprockets.
Uncle Duke was testing one of his carts on an Indiana interstate under construction (fully paved, not open to traffic). He took a run down the road for a couple of miles, did a 180 degree slide to go back, & a state police cruiser was flying down the road at him. Seems the LOE had him clocked well over a hundred, & was pretty pissed off he couldn't catch my uncle. Duke was a good ol boy & talked himself out of jail/ticket. & he took off back to his pit crew & left the cop standing there.
20 years ago, 2 friends and I put a 400 HP small block 350 in a Datsun 240Z, all kinds of problems, had to modify the front supension, narrow a Camaro rear end, and many others. Was it worth it?..............
OH YEA BABY!!!!!!!!!!!! That SOB was fast, still a Gixer motor in a cart.
