Stirring the Pot O' Hog

Post by JCsman »

I was chatting with a Gold Winger that works at the Alabama DOT today about riding. He mentioned a mutual aquaintance. I said I didn't know he rode a bike. That's when he related the quintesential H-D posser story.

This was a recently retired guy who bought a H-D 1200 Sportster two years ago. I turns out this guy had never ridden a bike of any type but just knew a H-D would fit his retirement lifestyle.

The story goes that the bike has 19 miles on it and the guy telling the story says he put on 16 of those. The owner tried it once and got scared. So he trailered it to a place and had it converted to a trike. The guy I was talking to was able to convince his buddy to circle the ALDOT complex a couple of times. Then the owner rode it home where it sits (outdoors) to this day. When last seen it had a flat tire and a dead battery.

I asked why the guy doesn't sell the bike. The explaination:

He bought over $2,000 worth of H-D clothing and he's found out that owning a H-D is as good as riding a H-D.

Sheeeesh.

That's cool.

I know a 20 year old guy who in 1983 bought a brand new Suzuki GS1100E. He had no riding experience other that his friends Honda 90 for a weekend.

A mile and a half from the showroom, he proceeded to wheelie through a red light, T-bone a pickup, fly over the truck and scrape a lot of meat off of his arse and hands.

Isn't Suzuki awful? 8) 8) 8)

A favorite story was told by a riding buddy who said he was at a local dealership when he saw a middle-aged man leaving with his first bike, a new cruiser. The bike was on the wide sidewalk at the front door of the building. The buyer rode the bike over the curb onto the parking lot and went straight across the lot to collide head-on with a parked BMW car. The buyer got up off the ground and staggered back toward the front door. My buddy was afraid to laugh, figuring that the owner of the car would be on the scene momentarily. As he approached the buyer said, "Well, I guess it's for the best that I hit my own car." Then it was Ok to laugh. The man sold the bike back to the dealership at considerable loss. :o

I was in my local 'Harley Heaven' Harley dealer yesterday and I spotted a new BMW R1200ST on the showroom floor...it had only 90 miles on the clock...a guy had just traded it for a new Harley..he wished he had bought a Harley in the first place.

At the Octoberfest at my local dealer, someone had just traded a HD Roadking in. Not sure what he bought, I guess you never know what is right for you til you get home. Maybe a CL, they still had a couple.

Frank. That story is not believeable. Everyone knows that you can't just tap a Harley into gear!

Frank,

It must have made a huge racket running like that with all the oiled leaked out over the past 10 years.

Yeah, I can't find any other Harley rider around my parts willing to ride like I do. I tell 'em "The bike did real well going to New Jersey and back." and they look at me like I just flew to the moon and back.

I put more miles on my HD that week to NJ than some of these loafers do in a year on their cruisers. Jiminee. That's a lot of money to spend on lawn ornament.

I show them the miles on my Roadster and they flip out...

Don't know, but I repeated it for you! :P

Butt jewelry is the term I use for all the high dollar-low mileage bikes out there. HD and custom bikes being the majority of them.

Not a Harley

Post by MattPie »

Not a Harley story, but:

My Dad had a Honda something or other when I was little (3-4). We had a party at my house with family. After a few beers, my Uncle David asks if he can take it for a spin.

So, David's on the bike, my Dad asks, "You know how to ride it, right?" "Piece of Cake, eh?" (He's Canadian). Revs it up, pops the clutch. Proceeds to do a huge fishtail on the gravel driveway, runs off onto the lawn, and slides it (and him) under a split-rail fence.

That's the only memory I have of the bike, seeing it on it's side on the far side of the fence.

Not so long after I'd passed my motorbike test, I went with friends to Barton Bike Night, a big biker event in Barton-on-Humber which is the first Wednesday every July.

It was a wet evening and I'd borrowed a Ducati Monster kindly loaned by a female patient who had been following my motorcycling career with interest.

As we arrived in Barton, and all the bikes are slowing down to enter the town, I looked across to see a man getting out of a Nissan Micra. Wearing full leathers, he picks up his helmet off the back seat and starts walking into the town centre.

Now, I asked myself, is he a biker, not wanting to ride in the wet, or is he just pretending!
