Ahhh...caffeine, the last legally addicting stimulant. Just say no to drugs except alcohol, tobacco and caffeine (hey I'm 3 for 3!!). One of the happiest days of my life was the day Dunkin Donuts started taking plastic.
Only place whose coffee is as acceptable as what I make at home. You can take your Starbuck and whatnot and flush 'em. 1/2 caf no foam cinnamon and biscotti...($&* all that. Give me a cup of plain old coffee.
I lived on Mountain Dew in high school and still get my RDA of the green stuff.

Tuesday I took a treadmill/stress test. No caffine that morning. My luvin wife said, "No problem, just make a smaller pot of coffee for me that morning."

An AWFUL day. Lethargic, moody, grouchy - OK, pretty normal.

Gotta have my Cup(s) o' Joe!

I am at a conference right now at the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island, Florida. I just gave in to peer pressure and had the first "Mojito" of my 47 year life.

It was delicious. I would have started drinking them when I was younger had I known they were so good.

Will need an extra cup of joe tomorrow AM!

BTW - I boycott Starbucks when there is an alternative available. It used to be cool until it became overdone and overrated.

I don't get it. If something is good, but only limited to a few places that are hard to find, it's really good. Once something good becomes convenient and easy to access, it's not cool anymore so it isn't good.

On the other hand, I am spoiled. There must be 1000 Starbucks in Tokyo (seriously). As is typical for Japanese operated businesses, they are ran very professional with consistant quality and clean stores. Every time I go to the US, I am disappointed by the inconsistancy in service, the dirty tables, etc. They mess up my order about 20% of the time.
Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please.

I love good, strong, fresh ground coffee. However, (and I'm embarassed to say this,) I drink loose leaf tea mostly. What a wuss, huh? My coworker pointed out though that, to his knowledge, all of the great despots and dictators of the last two centuries were tea drinkers.

Oh well.

Tea. PG Tips or Yorkshire Tea.

But then, this is England.

The coffee here isn't that good but is getting better.

You Americans seem to love sh*t beer, fizzy 'orrible stuff. But for all that, I'm still a Yankophile (is that the right word?).

Jonothan,
Beer always depends on the situation, and location. If I am in for a long day tailgating for a football(gridiron) game, I will go for a Budweiser or Miller High Life because I can keep myself under better control. When I visit my local pub, I usually get something like Old Speckled Hen, Boddington's, Pilsner Urquell, Spaten, or a brew from one of the many small US breweries.

My favorite beer ever was in Prague at a place called U fleck U.

One big cup of fresh brewed Folgers in the morning does me good. Then at night it's a little Vodka in some Coca Cola and ice. Makes me sleep like a drunk baby. Not much beer at all for me, except when I'm with riding buddies at a campsite somewhere.

I have to watch during the day though. If I don't keep a cup of water on my desk, I get dehydrated by the end of the day and am grumpy as hell.

I fresh grind my beans from Pete's (San Fransisco) with a good grinder the morning I make the stuff, use filtered water, keep the pot VERY clean, and use less than the recommended amount of beans to water ratio (read, weaker). I drink a couple mugs in the morning, and put the remaining mug in a thermos for work. Black thank you, I don't want a danm thing in my coffee..... save for the occasional shot of whiskey or Kahlua & Brandy.
REAL Blue Mountain (99% of the time, us Americans are sold counterfeited Blue....) and a REAL Cuban Cohiba Robusto (99% of the time, it's gonna be a counterfeit) is simply orgaaasssmic!

I like:
Stout beer
Designer beer
Rusty Nails
Single Malts
La Familia Tequila
Pendleton Whiskey
Martini made w/Hendrix Gin
Vodka/Tonic
Rum & Coke w/lime
Red Wine (any kind!)

and a glass of water (no ice) in between the drinks. I usually have no more than two mixed drinks; I don't like 'dizzy', and hate "drunk."

Caffeine & Spirits...

Caffeine & Spirits...

What a great thread! =D>

I love some good black coffee, as long as it is so strong it looks almost like it's solid...

Monster Low-Carb or Red Bull Sugar-Free can pack a good "recharge" when ya' need it, and I have just about become addicted to the Monster stuff...

Does anybody remember the days of "Jolt" cola back when it really meant what it said - "Twice the Caffeine and Twice the Sugar, for that Jolt!"?

But spirits... Ah, the list could go on and on... but a few of the favs:

Glenmorangie Port Wood Finish
Glenmorangie Sherry Wood Finish
Anything MacAllan makes
And most good Single Malts, like Balvenie, etc.
Martell Cordon Bleu cognac
Bombay Sapphire Gin in a true martini
Grey Goose Vodka done the same
A true scratch-built Margarita with a quality Reposado tequila, straight-up, no salt
Any properly done, carefully constructed Bloody Mary, but it has to have some serious "snap"...
Veuve Clicquot champagnes - my personal favorite
Dom Perignon is a good choice, but over-rated in my book
Louis Roederer Cristal is pretty hard to beat, though
Some of Korbel's California "Champagnes" will do in a pinch...
A true New Orleans mix Pimm's Cup dingle is nice on a hot afternoon...
(since when is c - o - c - k - t - a - i - l a dirty word the board "net nanny" has to remove?)

I could go on, but it's morning and I don't want to start too early!

Cheers!

running the risk of sounding like a party pooper....

coffee is NOT good for your body everyday...it is especially BAD in the morning. those who skip coffee and feel like poo are utterly addicted chemically to it. time to break your habit.

i treat coffee as a once in a while thing, not to be had daily. like ice cream or candy.

btw, Starbucks WAS NEVER GOOD. absolutely bitter flat coffee. crap.

jonothan, beer in america is being touted (by a british beer writer no less!) as being some of the best in the world. what you're referring to is the bland 'american lager' that budweiser made famous. that 'style' from the big mass producers is bland and utterly disgusting swill. come to my neck o' the woods and i'll show you some american beer that will make you proud to be a yankophile.

As for what I drink, I prefer water most of the time with good, quality, fresh, yummy beer thrown in for good measure. (weekends of course!)

I do like Earl Grey tea too!

I have to admit to liking the effects of caffeine. Not that I feel overly stimulated by it or feel I need it to get and keep me going. What I like about it is that it suppresses my appetite and I don't over eat. Of course the downside to that is that I love beer and caffeine does nothing to stop that indulgence. Hence my ability to manage my weight suffers.

I am not fussy about my coffee. I will brew a pot or make instant. Drink it black. I absolutely hate Starbucks. Tastes and smells like burnt effluent to me. I do LOVE stopping at Tim Horton's (for you non-Canadians or Buffalo, NY folks, Tim was a great defenceman for the Leafs and Sabres who established a coffee chain. After he died in a tragic car accident and his wife sold the business, it exploded into a staggeringly successful chain in Canada. Now owned by Wendy's).

I do like tea as well, although I think I might be a bit of a snob here. I like Twinings - but not in the tea bag. Darjeeling is my fav, but also like Earl Grey and English Breakfast.

And as for pop (or soda as you call it in the US), I try to avoid the caffeinated versions for some reason. Perhaps because I don't like mixing my liquor with it!!! Although I do find diet, decaf Coke and Coke Zero to be quite enjoyable with Canadian or American whisky and any sort of rum (especially dark rum like Woods Navy).

Not all the US, Gord.

Here in the deep south all such beverages are referred to a co-colas.

Even a grape Nehi is a grape co-cola to some.

Ask for a soda pop in some of the redneck haunts and they'll "soda pop" you up the sida yo head.
