Water over and under the Bridge!

Post by kbc68 »

Six years, 500 million euros, 918 meters long.......now this is
engineering!
This is a channel-bridge over the river Elbe and joins the former East
and West Germany, as part of the unification
project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg, near Berlin. The
photo was taken on the day of inauguration. to those of us who
appreciate engineering projects....

Considering that bridge is higher than a naturally flowing river, I'd say it would have to work under similar principles/mechanisms the Panama Canal uses.

Mein Gott! This is an aquaduct to be reckoned with...

I always thought the Romans had the corner on the market, but this is absolutely cool. Wonder when the tubers and rafters will take it on...

Thats either a great photo shop pix or the stupidist public works project I've ever seen.

That has to be photshop. Can you post a link to the site about this engineering feat?

OK, I googled this thing & it looks like its real. Supposedly connects 2 canales for shipping & keeps the shipping going during low water seasons.

Still looks pretty wacky to me. Whats wrong with rail?

Because you can't move big chunks of Airbus by rail!

Seriously, the cheapest and most efficient way to move heavy, bulky stuff is by barge.

BTW, have you seen the terrain in Germany? The river valley in the picture may give the impression of fairly flat ground but the area is really fairly mountainous. The canals that were connected are probably much higher than the river.

You can question the German's social and political sense but never doubt their engineering prowress!

"I want to cross the Magdeburger Bridge."
It is broken down.
"Who broke it down?"
The goldsmith, the goldsmith
With his daughter.
"Have it built again."
But with what?
"With chains and with poles."
All creep through, all creep through,
The last one we will sieze."

By the way - Deej's photo is the real thing - the bridge is an aqueduct that connects two elevated canals.
