Choosing digital handsets for the home phone

Post by KHaynes »

I'm buying a new cordless phone. Is there an advantage of either a 5.8Ghz or a 2.4Ghz?

Maybe

Keith, the claim is that 5.8 is less prone to interference and has a better range around the house and yard.

Both still subject to intercept if that matters to you.

My 900Mhz model still manages from center of house to 40-50 feet through walls in either direction. The 5.8 isn't noticeably better.

I'll have to ask the FBI guys if the taps work any differently for them.

Digital Phone

Post by KHaynes »

Thanks Mike, I searched the net and couldn't find anything regarding the comparitive advantages of frequency ranges.
I'm off today to buy a digital phone for our new home. I understand the problem with transmission intercept but when my wife is on the phone to her mother, the listener would be in danger of being bored to death.

We seem to go through a lot of phones. I've had 900 mhz, 1.2ghz, and 2.4 ghz. I have not noticed any differences at all.

Phones

Given my limited knowledge of this, I'm not sure if the operating frequency makes much difference but I expect it might depend on what other local interference there is within the same frequency ranges.
I'm really after someone who can educate me in this respect.

If you're doing wireless networking at home, you'll want to make sure that the phone and the access point are working at different frequencies. It is a pain to figure out why one thing or the other quit working when you don't have the equipment to recognize the interference...
