Race Report on "Land Speed Lear"

Post by darthrider »

"Dangerous Dean-O" Lear has reported in from the Bonneville Salt Flats.
As part of the old codger's rolling vacation (from what??) he accompanied the San Jose BMW crew to the Salt Flats for the Bub Exhaust motorcycle only meet this week.

His first report yesterday was to announce that San Jose's 1978 BMW R100RS air head hot-rod had run 162+ MPH at 9K RPM! Exceptional speed and exceptional RPM for this old war horse.

GrandPa Hoon, as most first time visitors to this remarkable raceway, immediately fell in love with the place and was totally in awe of the quiet, surreal beauty of the salt dessert in Utah, the flatest spot on Earth.

He was so taken with the Flats and the race event he returned today on his trusty R1200ST and entered the "Run What You Brung" class and was clocked at 144.4MPH, bouncing off the rev limiter. Remember this is at 4500' elevation and there is constant wheelspin at speed on a powerful motorcycle. The wheelspin was probably equal to another 3-4 MPH so don't let anyone tell you the Hexheads aren't fast motorcycles!

Dean-O also said he got a speeding ticket in Nevada. He was clocked at 91 in a 65 zone but the friendly cop knocked it down to 80 to help him out.
I told him the cop just gave him a Senior Citizen's Discount!

Pray for the old boy...he needs our help.

I am jealous as heck! 8)

Go Git EM Dean O,...did ya get the ticket BEFORE or AFTER the run on the flat, if it was before just say you were warming up the tires, and after just say the throttle stuck on the flat

That is simply too cool for words!! Dean Lear, the flying Olde Pharte.

I would so love to see the salt someday. One of our drivers, Cory Friedman, the team boss's son is starting to make noises that he wants to go 200mph. In the short amount of time he has it on the banking at Daytona, the car gets to just above 160... (damn chicane) ...and he wants more. I can dig it! If it ever happens, I promise you I'll be in on it.

I forgot to mention yesterday that El Rat-O Dean-O *also* got to ride the Powercup race bike that is in the custody of San Jose!

The wind kicked up and they stopped racing but Dean-O "borrowed" it and got to take it to a clear area and ride it. He had nothing but good things to say about the handling, engine, power delivery, etc.

I can just hear it now..."Please Miz Pam, I don't *want* a K1200R...I *NEED* a K1200R!! Please...please...please..."

I wouldn't at all be surprised to see him back at Bennevile either...that is the most addictive racing I have ever seen.

Well, yes but not out on the Salt Flats and it wasn't a bathing suit.
I'm afraid poor inebriated Dean-O was arrested at the blackjack table at the State Line Casino in nearby Wendover, Utah/Nevada in a pair of badly stained tighty-whities yelling "Who's your Daddy!?"
Bail was posted the next morning at $12.73. Dean-O skipped bail and now has a fugitive warrant out for his arrest.
The police consider him unarmed and not very dangerous.

Nothing wrong with that except,
a pair of badly stained tighty-whities
But I guess that keeps the other inmates away from you.
