BMW Microfiche question - Starter Motor Cover

Looking to get a replacement starter motor cover for my 2004 R1150R. (I will not go into why I need a new one, let's just say the old one is "very tired")

Looking at the BMW parts fiche for R1150R, there are 2 available part #'s for this cover.

11 14 7 652 125 STARTER COVER, SILVER
11 14 7 684 404 STARTER COVER, SILVER (from 08/03)
11147684404 was superseded by 11147684405.

The "from 08/03" is confusing, as I took delivery of my bike on August 21, 2003.
I found on ebay for model year 2002, and I am wondering if my bike has the 2002 version.


any advice is appreciated.

You're topicstart is a bit confusing too.
First you write "my 2004 R1150R". Later on I read "I took delivery of my bike on August 21, 2003".
If you took delivery of your bike on august 21 2003, you can safely assume it was build before August. So your bike has the 2002 version.

In the USA, model years are sold before the calendar year end. Right now, BMW is selling 2018 models in the USA. so my bike is titled as a 2004 model.

Yeah, easybee is right. Despite BMW Motorrad's claim to make bikes according to the "Just-In-Time" principle, generally speaking your machine will have been put together and shipped from Germany well before it was driven new out of the dealer showroom. Most components are date-stamped, so just undo a couple and look at the date of manufacture stamped on the inner face. Especially injection-moulded bits like fairing parts, starter-motor plastic shroud, etc. But maybe except the dozens of Chinese-made bits that are now incorporated into modern Beemers.

I believe BMW added a jump-post hole in the later model starter covers, which, even if you don't have one now, you could add if you wanted to (it's a bracket connected to the starter's battery terminal with a post that sticks out through the hole in the cover).

Anyway, you can get the exact build date of your bike by inputting its VIN at http://www.realoem.com and then look at their diagrams of parts for your bike with retail costs.
