Looking for advice on wiring in additional lighting.

Post by butcherandthelamb »

I've been looking at hooking up some LEDs. I've done some research and I'm pretty sure I want to go with a set of these.

with a dimmer switch added in. The owner of the company sent me a few pics form a previous customer, as seen below. He mounted them to the fender bolt by getting a longer one and putting it through the lights. (Anyone know what size and pitch that particular bolt is?)

I'm new to wrenching, and electrical stuff seems a bit intimidating. I was wondering if anyone has a good tutorial on how to hook these things up, or if I should play it safe and take it to a shop. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you're not sure about wrenching and electrical stuff, then it depends on your confidence. If you're the type that does actually learn quickly and is patient and will read instructions fully - then by all means go for it, it's not too complex.

If not..... then be aware that you 'can' screw things up in an expensive fashion.

Are you going to wire in the lights to be totally independently switched - or do you want to tie the switching in with other lights?

Not sure I'd want a switch or dimmer mounted on the side of the headstock like that tbh. if you're thinking that you'll be able to reach it while sat on the bike, then I think you'll find it harder than you might think.

I'm not set on mounting the dimmer there, but my understanding is that the lights will kick on 100 percent when the high beam is switched on (if you wire it that way) and reverts to whatever the dimmer is set at with the high beam off. I'd assume you would set the dimmer prior to riding, or they make a switch that gives you 40% at low beam and 100% at high beam.

I'd like to tie them into the other lights, but they do offer a "plug and play" harness.
