Bike dies with clutch out

My 2002 R1150R w/o ABS will start, idle with the bike in gear with the clutch pulled in or with the bike in neutral out of gear. AS soon as I let the clutch out the bike dies.

any ideas of problem, how to fix it?

I don't have a wiring diagram handy, but my first guess would be check the side stand switch .

Remove the wires from the switch and see what happens then .

Not sure if the switch is open or closed with the side stand down, put a jumper wire across the wires if removing the wires didn't help .

I eliminated the sidestand switch and the problem still exist, now it stalls with the stand up and clutch out while running.

Does it die regardless of the rpm's? does it feel like a switch shutting it down or does it just chug until it dies like its starving for fuel?

It stalls ( dies ) like a switch, rpm does not matter
Going to run some berrysman b12 through today.

How did you elimiate the side stand sw?
I will have to look at the diagrams but my feeling (guess) is the bike thinks its in gear. So is the netural light on? It almost has?? to be associated with the interlock between the clutch sw micro and the side stand micro. These are a make or break sw's thru a relay under the seat. and you will have to elimate it by brideging the wires. The one on the clutch must be working?? One way is use pins (safety?) or straight pins thru the wire and a short wire lead with 'gator clips or just twist them on.
I'm not sure which relay it is but several have the same # so can sw them around.

If neutral light not on then do the same to that sw.

I cut the wire and attached the brown and white wire together. Netural light is off if in gear, on when in netural functions normal.

I added Berryman B12 to gas, it still stalls when riding under load. I found it is worse when over 5,000 rpm.
If I keep it between 3 and 4000 rpm I only get an a stutter every so often.
I wonder if I need a new fuel pump?

I thought you ment if the bike was in neutral and running and you let the clutch out it died?? You kinda elimitaded that problem by bypassing the side stand sw and if the neutral light is working that sw is also(most likely). You can use any liquid pressure gauage to check pressure. Put it inline with the output line and see if it builds to around 50 psi and then shuts off. How about the filter(fuel) how long? since changed.

Checked the air filter and exhaust for blockage as in mice?

kinda sounds like intermitent ignition. Hall sensors have had problems with the harness running up to the wireing loom becoming frayed and grounding out intermitently. You have cut the ties under the steering head???

Turned out to be a broken wire to the fuel pump which was making intermittent contact.

Fixed now and the bike runs perfect.

Any one want to buy a new fuel pump?

It is odd that the engine died just as the clutch was pulled in. Looking at the wiring diagram, there was no relay, switch, or fuse combination responsible for this exact malfunction. This also draws attention to the importance of diagnosing a problem before "likely" replacement parts are purchased.

I did find an easy way to eliminate the side stand switch if it goes bad and causes you and your bike to be stranded. Just remove the sidestand connector and jumper wire the bike harness' terminals 1 and 3 (connect the brown to brown/white stripe wires). A really prepared rider of a high mileage older OilHead would have just such a short jumper wire in the tool kit, ready to plug it into that sidestand harness terminal.

EDIT: Warning! Disabling the sidestand switch allows you to ride the bike with the sidestand down, with about an 80% chance of causing a very nasty accident on the first or second left hand turn.

I expect the contact was lost due to the movement of the bike when I released the clutch. it was a single wire under the tank inside a bundle of wires. When the wire lost contact it killed the fuel pump. Any vibration or movement would make the wire loose contact.

That was a good find, how did you troubleshoot it to the fuel pump ??
As it seemed to be a switch causing the problem .
With the engine running you can't tell if the pump is running or not .

I at first though it was the sidestand cutout switch. I disabled it and the problem continued.
I then noted that the bike died when I turned the handlebars, It would start and run turned to either side, but die when straighten. I thought it was a faulty fuel pump.

When you turn on the key the fuel pump whines, it would whine when the bars were turned. I then decided it was a wiring issue. I pulled on wiring bundles on the left and right, The right bundle would make the fuel pump shut off and on. Then it was just a matter of finding the correct wire.
