Rear tire question

For you tire guru's............I find myself frequently on local gravel roads. We've got a bunch of 'em around here. And of course riding thru the mountains here in the fall you have opportunity to explore a bit. I'm very soon to replace my rear tire (done over 5K since May) and I'm considering a more aggressive rear tire and may follow with a front soon thereafter. Any recommendations on what sizes I can get away with on the rear? I have no experience with dual sport tires at all and not even certain of the wisdom of using one on an R but thought it worthy of asking.

Scorpion Trail, available in 160 and 180 widths for rear. I'm a fan of the old Scorpion Sync tire that preceded the Trails, still have a set mounted on extra wheels for those wet & wilderness mountain road days when I pre tend to have a GS.

I've had a 170 mounted on the Rockster's 5.5" rear wheel (road trip necessity), so guessing that a 160 on the Roadster's 5" might work. Perhaps others can chime in.

I'm running a 170 on the R11R stock 4.5" three spoke alloy. No problems. Caveat: no clearance to remove the wheel without moving the caliper first.
