Replace fuel injectors with carburettors.

Post by Soliton »

Yes it no doubt sounds like a crazy idea but has anyone heard of it being done on an R1150.

I have pretty heavily modded my bike and I have a thing for the idea of "right tech" which is matching the technology to the need. A good and well tuned CV carb (probably not a Bing more like a 40mm Mikuni) is adjustable to a range of different engine changes and has bugger all to go wrong with it.

Further the cost of a carburettor is nothing compared to a throttle bodies, injectors, etc etc

Yes, the power would be reduced, yes, my fuel economy may not be as good (maybe) but good engineering is about the right compromises and depending on the issues these may be compromises I would wear.

I love the simplicity of carbs and the fact that they are sooooo easy to fix, replace and modify.

So before I am lynchedI the question is has anyone done it and if not what would be the issues. BTW I'm not concerned about about legal/registration etc. When I took my bike to have it checked pre-rego the mechanic looked and asked me this question with a straight face... "How many cylinders does it have?"

I doubt very much whether anyone other than another BMW rider would ever notice.

Regards,

Sol.

Thanks mate you are a bloody king!

I knew it could be done and lo and behold it has been. Nice to see that the the issues I thought might be a problem aren't so big.

Yaaaaaaay!

That is certainly different. I am in the midst of shopping for another dual sport bike and No. 1 requirement is fuel injection! No more carbs for me!

I got so tired of fiddling with the carbs, I swore them off forever!

If it makes you happy and you like to adjust them, go for it! Not sure what benefit you might get other than tinkering though. Different strokes for different folks makes the world go round!

I love the simplicity of fuel injection, ease of maintenance & repair, where adjusting it is a matter of playing with a few keys on a keyboard, instead of drilling/swapping out jets.

On a boxer you have x2 injectors coolant and air temp sensors, a tps and a crank sensor, O2

Plus an ecu and away you go it don't get much simpler than that.

But hey I think it all depends on your mindset & skill level.

If you feel cabs are for you then its your bike to do with as you see fit, enjoy.

The very thought of having to mess with carbs again just makes me want to roll my eyes, I initially trained as a auto mechanic at a lotus dealer ship in the very early 80's so I remember multi carb setups very well.

I am very glad to see FI on vehicles and especially my bike. Not too many years back one of my co-workers rode a HD to work and I my R. On a cool day I literally could start mine and be a couple miles gone before he could get his off the parking lot. His was only a few years old but had a carb. I guess all of HD's are fuel injected now.

I realize the simplicity of a carb vs that of fuel injectors but the better drivability of fuel injection means a lot to me. The only gas motor I want a carb on is my lawn mower!

But that being said, I respect your desire to make the change. I hope it works out well for you!

Just a reminder that throttle bodies can be rebuilt and parts replaced, so seldom is replacement of a TB needed.

Somewhere on this board is a thread with my experience at getting mine repaired. Sure saved me a lot of money.
