Noise diagnosis

Post by matthaskell »

Took my 2004 1150r to the dealer to replace a leaking rear brake line, with nothing else functioning abnormally. All sounds were normal. Now there's a whirring sound that seems to be coming from the right oil cooler (not the brake servo). It's also making a similar whirring for about two seconds when I turn the key to the on position, before I fire it up. That sound seems to emanate from below the instrument cluster. I'm also smelling a slight burning smell at stops.

I'll of course be calling the dealer, but I'd like an idea of what's going on before I call. Any ideas will be very appreciated.

That sounds like the fuel pump. It runs and builds up fuel pressure as soon as the key is turned to on. But I would have thought you would have heard that before. The only other device that makes any noises would be the ABS pump (providing you have ABS).

If it goes VROOM, VROOM when you turn the throttle, goes forward when you release the clutch, stops when you hit the brakes and no oil pressure light is shining, then you are good to go. Just ride.
