My 04 r1150r came with a windshield that I believe was the OEM touring accessory that had been cut down to more of a deflector than a windshield (see first pic). At first I wasn't in love with that idea (always preferred a full shield in the past) but after 500 or so miles behind it I actually like the deflection it provides and I think I'll keep it that way instead of finding a taller replacement.

My question is, the modification left a couple jagged spots that weren't smoothed down (see second pic). Does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to smooth that? Sandpaper? Grit?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Modified windshield cleanup - Need suggestion for sandin
I have worked with some plexy and lexan sheets so maybe can offer a couple workable suggestions. It looks to me as though the radius around the cut top isn't very even. I'd start there. Look at it from either side and you'll see unevenness in the arc. I'd take a long sharp flat file, a fine one - one you'd use on metal - and even those out. File along the top edge of the screen cutting in the direction of the edge not across it. Go easy. You'll be able to round the edge a bit at the same time. Then I'd use a rubber sanding block with some 150 grit wet/dry sand paper and remove any fine cutting marks the file left. Use it dry. Then repeat with a finer grit of the same paper, maybe 300. Cover the bike under the screen with big towels or a blanket. You'll have some plastic debris you wont want falling into the bike. Maybe lock the steering so the screen is stable and do your filing fairly gently. that should do it. Looks like the screen is BMW's touring version that's been shortened. It it seems to be flexing too much in this process I'd pull it off the bike before attempting this but my guess is that you can do it in place.

I cut mine down too. PO did a hack job on yours. Another tip to add is to sand down the cut area and try to match the roundness of the bevel on the edge to match the OEM screen. I would start with a lower course grit to get the shape you want and then go to a fine grit.

I have actually cut into it some more since that pic, but have not taken a new picture yet. Good luck. You should be fine.
