Ram Mount help

Hey all, hoping there's an expert in here who can help out a Ram Mount newb... I'm looking to mount my phone to the bars using this:

Droid Slip Grip Mount

Ideally I'd be mounting it off to the side, and I'd like the arm/base to have enough length/maneuverablility to allow the phone to be used as both a GPS and camcorder. The Ram Mount site seems to be geared either to pre-built solutions based on product/application or DYI solutions for people with the knowledge and familiarity. Neither really apply to me

Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

When I started using RAM Mount stuff, I felt the same way.

One thing you can do is look at a pre-built solution and then look at the component parts. You can then, generally, buy those parts individually.

So find a handlebar mount that would work if you were using some Garmin GPS or whatever, but is otherwise how you want it. Then look at the components, and grab the ones you want.

Also, when you look at one of the parts, you can look at the section it's in and browse similar parts. That way you might find something that even better fits your needs.

Does that make sense?

In this post I have a photo of an iPhone setup I was messing around with for a while. I later updated it to use a less bulky/ridiculous phone holder, but don't have a photo of that iteration because I eventually quite screwing around and just put a Zumo in a locking Touratech mount on my bike. Problem solved.

The setup I used was a single ball with a pass-through hole on the forward left triple bolt, obviously with a longer bolt. Those single balls are available at TwistedThrottle, Touratech (I think) and probably even Amazon. I don't recall if the longer bolt was from a Touratech kit for a GS or if I ended up sourcing a specific bolt separately - I have tons of these bolts of various lengths laying around now and have no idea where each one came from at this point. Beyond that, it's basically a mid-length arm and the phone holder. I think it's much cleaner to mount it that way than to use one of the handlebar clamps. I can try to dig up more details if you like.

Anyway, with something like that, you can use different length arms and point them to wherever you want it to be. Just be aware that as the arm length gets longer, the unit will vibrate more.

Have you checked the Xgrip? http://www.rammount.com/Products/XGript ... fault.aspx
It works with a variety of phones and gps units so when you get a new phone you don't need to buy a new ram mount.

Thanks gentlemen! I guess the Ram Mount site really isn't the best place to start (oddly). Maybe there's just too much there for a first timer. Looking at the Twisted Throttle Ram mount section gave a much clearer picture of what was what - and it's limited to motorcycle mount/options - thanks Surj.

It works with a variety of phones and gps units so when you get a new phone you don't need to buy a new ram mount.

Actually, I really like that the one I posted is clean and designed specifically for my phone (and the exact model of Otter Box I use with that phone). I'm taking the easy way out this time since I found that mount so easily, but had I not, I would have drilled holes in the back of my Otter Box and mounted a ball there. The benefit here is obviously convenience, since I will be able to pop the phone/Otter Box out of the mount, as opposed to just the phone from the adapted Otter Box. I'm thinking about using this with this, assuming the reservoir cap is compatible.

For those curious as to why I'd mount a GPS so wide, I assure you, I have very little intention of using it as a navigation tool. I use maps mostly (gasp) and plan most of my days in advance - it's part of the fun for me. On occasion, I get lost, or see places or things I want to explore off the route I decided. When that happens, I have to dig out my phone and route myself back on track, it'd be nice to have it there and ready in those situations. I'm mostly mounting it to take occasional video, so a wide mount with maneuverability will probably work the best.

If you're looking to mount wide and since you mentioned video, you may want to look at putting one of these M8 hole ball dealies on the bolt that holds the windscreen frame on your bike - I have one on each side of my bike and it's perfect for putting a GoPro out to the side of the gauges for filming the road ahead. As you can probably tell, I'm very adverse to using the u-clamp.
