Maintenance nightmare?
New member. Howdy. Just bought '04 R1150R. Virtually no maint history. Looks good. Do you really need to flush the brake fluid EVERY year? Due for 12k service. What REALLY needs to be done? I can do it all myself but is this just BMW wanting our money for visits? Seems to me trans and final fluids fluids can go much further.

Re: Maintenance nightmare?
Shame on me but the bike looks and rides like new. 12,500 miles. What do I REALLY need to do for 12k service?
Re: Maintenance nightmare?
If the bike is running great, then just ride it until something goes wrong.
If you believe in preventive maintenance, then google "R1150R maintenance schedule" to get the manufacturer's recommendations, look up the various procedures on this and other R1150** related message boards, and get to work. DIY maintenance is very simple for these Boxer oilheads.

Re: Maintenance nightmare?
Where do I start. QDC on fuel tank? and electrical conn. Flushing brake fluid? Remote fuel filter? What else do I need to know?
Re: Maintenance nightmare?
"QDC"? Flushing brake fluid every 2 years! Remote fuel filter is nice to have but no must have. Suggest you get yourself the maintenance manual which can sometimes be found on egay. In principle you need to look after your oil, oil filter, gearbox and FD oil, airfilter, brake fluid, brake pads, valve settings and proper synch. You also need to check the zip ties around the front light as they are usually quite tight and may result in broken cables in the long-run.

Re: Maintenance nightmare?
First, congrats - the R1150R is a great bike. And welcome to this incredible forum.
When I got my '03 R1150R, I did the following:
1. Changed the tires. Treads were fine but the rubber was old - like 8 years old. I got Michelin Pilot Road 2 tires. I'm now on PR3 tires. LOVE THEM.
2. I changed the FD, Xmission, and Engine oils - all dino - BMW FD/Xmission & Castrol 20/50 motocycle engine- BMW filter.
3. I did indeed replace the fuel quick disconnects - (your QDC?). Get the metal one at beemerboneyard for about 80 bucks - KEEP THE OLDS ONE to bleed the gas tank if you decided to the fuel filter - just add some old hose to them.
4. Air filter - beemerboneyard.
5. I did the valves, plugs, and Throttle Body sync at 12K.
6. Removed zip ties at headlight - omg1010 is right.....
This week, I did my 24K tune up which included alternator belt and fuel filter. You can wait on both at the 12K but if you do the fuel filter, go beemerboneyard and get the fuel filter kit which includes the o-rings and smaller clamps. You might also want to consider replacing the fuel lines - I had the problem of fuel lines cracking longitudinally and so did this repair when I did the fuel filter.... beemerboneyard sells a fuel line kit.
Used the Clymer manual, ibmwr.org, and this forum for instructions. I also have a list of URL pointers - here you go:

Re: Maintenance nightmare?
Thanks Lifer! You put everything I need in one post. Now tell me which windshield to buy and where. Stock one is horrible. I already took it off for some buffet relief.
Re: Maintenance nightmare?
sometimes in life you just need to dig in on your own, make a decision and either live with it or back up and try another way. having riders on the board "tell" you what to do, won't make your journey on the R any easier. besides, that is the fun part of owing these bikes. if you try something, like a different windshield and it doesn't turn out the way you thought, can be something you share on the forum. you can also sell the item and try again.

Not asking what I should do. Asking which windshield is best.

Re: Maintenance nightmare?
So, RedRyder which windshield should I get? Been searching and getting inconsistent and inconclusive info on R1150R compatability with factory mounts.

Re: Maintenance nightmare?
Welcome new guy, most anything you will need or want, parts, accessories, gear, etc. will come thru the "Advrider", web site sooner or later. I bought my Sargent seat, BMW jackets, boots, PIAA 100X driving lights, etc. Go sign on and register, it is a great resource. And for parts for your bike, look at the "Beemerboneyard " website.

Re: Maintenance nightmare?
Rode 100 miles today with no windshield. Buffeting less than with, but I still need a taller windshield. Will ck classifieds here. Thanks for all the help!
Re: Maintenance nightmare?
Hmmm. There are some things that are objective - like removing the zip ties at the head lamp to prevent wires from breaking or old tires that need replacing. Oh, and brakes - don't mess with brakes. And listen to CycleRob and Sunbeemer.
Then there's the subjective stuff - like motor oil (dino/synthetic), aftermarket vs oem, seats and wind screens. I'm on my 3rd windscreen and still not happy. I have the original R1150R seat and have monkey butt after 400 miles. Doing dino not synthetic as the previous owner let this bike SIT for 8 years without riding it and I'm worried about seals (a personal problem). These are the things that RedRider rightfully says makes bike ownership fun. What might be perfect for me may not be right for you. You took the risk by getting a bike so risk a bit more by making choices on how to outfit it.
