troubles

Post by hortbum »

Removed the 2 main spark plugs fine. Started to remove one from underneath, when i started having problems. It started to loosen fine, then got very tight. So i tried to go back the other way. Now its tight both ways. Any advise would be great. The socket is also stuck in plug. Thanks

Probably the socket is stuck in the recess for the plug. Somehow you need to get the socket off the plug, and try to find one with a thinner wall to remove the plug. Wiggling the socket with a big-ass (tech-term) pair of channel locks may work.

If not that - then the threads may be damaged in your head, and that's not a pleasant thing to think about, so we won't.

You need to get some penetrating oil in there, and you need to have some good luck too. Liquid wrench is my favorite.

lts more likely your socket. You can put oil in the top plug hole to help, but get the socket off and start over.

start by screwing the plug back in to get the socket off.

take your time, don't force any thing.

Once the plug is out, crank the bike with both spark plugs grounded and out of the head. this will clear any thing out that should not be there. like excess oil.

Try running the engine for a minute, then attempt removal just after shut down, the aluminum head may expand faster the the steel plug and socket.

Don (deilenberger) might still have the part number of the Harbor Freight socket that fits. I bought the socket but don't have the number.

I took a socket that fit the plug and turned it in a bench disk sander until it's outside diameter cleared the space it had to to turn the plug without binding. It's a fairly tight fit but there's enough wall strength to the socket still to torque the plug.
