Repair plug 83300413585 for gps radar

Post by Dr. Strangelove »

I'm going to be joining the r1200r club in the near future. A 2009.
I will be attaching my zumo 550/XM and Valentine 1.
Regarding the female plug under the tank that is already present, a couple of questions, please:

The "repair plug" PN# 83300413585--that's the right one for a 2009 r1200r, correct?

If I ONLY plug this in to the already present plug (when I discover it's location :) ), and then simply splice the leads of the Zumo AND the Valentine to the appropriate leads, 1 and 3 I believe?, will that work properly? do I just leave lead 2 hanging in the breeze?

From reading some posts here I think I have seen mention that that will NOT be too much current going through the plug or the wires.
Is that correct?

Is it that simple a job?

TIA

John, first off Congrats =D>

Second; yep just that easy. When I wired up my Zumo I used 1&3 and soldered/shrink wrapped a SAE connector to it. I did that because I only use the GPS on trips and take it off for close to home riding.

As for using two devices at that connector, I am uncertain what the available power is at that connector.

Enjoy that new ride

Thanks, Big Easy
I will have the zumo/xm on 100% of the time most likely. Valentine will be on for trips.

There are three wires on the repair plug, but only two that you need. The middle one has something to do with the factory satnav.

You should check the amperage coming from the CANBUS system to the GPS plug under the headlight. I think it is 5 amps, but don't hold me to that. Them compare that with the amperage requirements for each device. I have never heard of anyone successfully running two devices at the same time from that source.

I think you may be better off running one of the commercially available power supplies. There were some posts about an Eastern something brand fuse block, and I think there may be some other alternatives that work with the CANBUS.

I searched for such a setup and found no report of success or failure. I did see a statement from a poster that it "should work because each device consumed so little power." But, just that, no more. I agree, sounds like a Rube Goldberg device, but hey, if it works!

Right, Eastern Beaver.

That, EB, is the alternative if I can't do the double splice, and it may happen anyway, eventually, when I install motolights.

Thanks

I have used that factory GPS circuit for years to power up my tank box, including running a GPS with XM antenna AND charging cameras, AND powering a headphone amplifier, plus iPhone at the same time. 3 gadgets charging at the same time has never created a fault in that circuit. I also run a 12v, 250 watt inverter and charged my MacBook off of that circuit with never an issue, and an inverter pulls far more power than a GPS or radar detector.

It's just fine, there's plenty of amperage for electronics, just don't plug an air pump into it. :smt023

Difference in my install is I didn't waist money on a BMW plug, I just cut the plug off and spliced directly into the OEM harness. There's no need for that plug unless you are going to use a BMW GPS IMO.

Good luck and congrats on the new bike.

Beautiful!
Thanks
Did all that on my 1150, including charging MacBook in my topcase. The r12 is a different animal though
Did u add accessory lighting ? Thought I read somewhere you added an accessory fuse box?

I do have a fuse block, my heated gear and a SAE plug I keep hanging down near the foot peg to power an air pump goes in it.
No additional lighting on my bike.
In hindsight could have just wired directly to the battery for those two high current draw things, since the battery is easy to get to having an inline fuse instead of the fuse block.
My other bikes don't use a fuse block, just wire direct to battery for my needs.

Holy Cow! Thats a lot of stuff.

I thought it was funny the battery light is on in the picture. Pretty sure the ignition was on but the engine was not running...

Just a FWIW..

It appears the GPS power outlet is in parallel with the accessory outlet both switched and protected by the same ZFE circuit.

That means the total amperage that can be drawn from both at the same time is 5A (rating on the accessory outlet.) A GPS normally draws fairly low current (probably less then 1A) but if it uses a battery and the battery is discharged it might draw more. A radar detector probably also draws under 1A. Should be fine to use both at the same time on that circuit, but if you also plug in a high-current consuming device into the accessory outlet (heated gear), the circuit may shut down due to overload. The circuit already shuts down if a Gerbing jacket liner is plugged into it (the jacket liner draws 7A+ at full on..)

some followup

I connected the zumo and the Valentine to the "repair" plug. When only the gps was connected it worked as advertised--shut down after a minute, however, when the Valentine was plugged in, the circuit stayed live for 13-14 minutes.
I think what may be happening is that when the Zumo lost hardwire power it shut down and had nothing residual in it, but when the Valentine was connected and then lost power, maybe there is a capacitor or something in its power chain that tells the can-bus to keep the circuit live--as can happen when something is drawing from the accessory outlet, it stays live.
When that residual electricity dwindles down, after 13-14 minutes, the repair plug circuit shuts down.
Just specualtion, I suppose, but it will soon be moot.
My EasternBeaver fusebox arrived and will now handle those duties

I just purchased a 2002 R1150R after riding a R1100R for years and I know this thread is old, but pertinent to my situation.
I have a powerlet heated jacket liner (which i run on the 60W setting) and glove liners...I could plug these directly into my
R1100R (DIN) power socket with no problems as there is plenty of excess electric capacity. I had no fuse problems either...
nothing ever blew.

I do understand that the R1150R is not a canbus system as well, but before i go plugging things in i'd just like a little
assurance that someone has done this in the past and i'm not going to short my entire fuse box out.
