I sold my first bike (1984 V30 Magna) and bought an exhaust upgrade for my 2002 r1150r: Remus y-pipe & Power Commander III usb

Also just for good looks, powder coated the front pipes + y-pipe in velvet black.

(I figure I'll go after the pricey Remus Revolution slip-on next year, or after I can sell a bunch of extra accessories I have lying around.)

So today I connected up the PCIII and tomorrow I'll put everything back together, start it up and sync the TBs.

My current plan is to take it to a local dyno guy for tuning. Unless anyone knows of some other fuel map option (thinking comparable bike map download?) that could save me some bills before I can throw down on the slip-on? The PCIII comes setup with a stock map that probably won't be right with my bike: K&N air filter + y-pipe and all.

I'll post some pics tomorrow after the tank's on – meanwhile here's a quick mobile shot from before I disconnected the stock O2 sensor.

Update: I scheduled an appointment with a local dyno guy, and he suggested sticking with a stock Power Commander map for the few days until I could bring the bike to him (heading in tomorrow).

The bike was NOT happy with the stock map – I definitely wouldn't have ridden it like that. I connected up the provided Power Commander software to my husbands laptop (worth noting that the PC software isn't available for macs) – we used the software to richen the map across the board by 5% – made a huge difference! It's running great, and the new sound is amazing. Can't wait to see the difference after it gets dialed in tomorrow...

Dyno numbers! Max Power 80.95, Max Torgue 73.98 (If I can get to a scanner tomorrow at work I'll post the graphs.)

The bike feels amazing: smooth, no weird surging, even power through the range but pumps it out a little around 5K. Seemed like it was a pretty easy job for the guy – he was working on an R1 when I got there, I take it he does a lot of sport tuning: Nels Beyersdorf at 2wheel dynotuning in Woodinville, WA: http://2wheeldynoworks.wordpress.com/

It's probably worth noting that after tuning, Nels said it was set too rich the way I had adjusted it. I guess that's why you go to the guy, eh?

That is exactly the colour I wanted for my pipes/Y-Pipe. Did you go for high temperature powder coating or the full internal/external ceramic?

High temp powder coating. The inner few inches were coated as well, FWIW the guy that did mine said that people who claim to do the full inside of the pipe are really only coating as far as you can see in, that being as far as they can really reach.

Couldn't 'see' anything?

Like the way they look, in the pic, up top!...is that a glossy or matte finish?

Might be easier to keep clean?

I had heard exactly the same thing about how far they coat them. (Best efforts, no guarantees.)

Having gone to the trouble of getting a Y-Pipe and setting it all up I am tossing up about going back to the cat-con. If I do that I can jam on a stainless tip and won't need a muffler (easy access to the back wheel.)


The crazy thing is cat + tip sounds almost the same as Y-Pipe + hot muffler. Go Figure!

Excellent choice going with Nels! I don't know if you're a member of pnwriders.com, but every six weeks he will has a get together for forum members at a discounted rate. He came over to Eastern Washington with his set up and ran through a bunch of us. I only had my 2 Duc 900ss's at the time, but he was able to tell from the maps that one of them had jets 10 sizes or so too big installed...the man knows his stuff.
