New Owner, Looking for rails

Post by redial »

Hi,

Just thought i should instroduce myself. Long time BMW enthusiast (2002 and 1989 3 series)
and moto rider (Ducati Monster, Husq 610sm)

My grandfather has been buying new BMW bikes for decades. I have lots of pictures of myself
as a toddler sitting on his airhead.

At 79 he finally hung it up and gave me first shot at his 2005 roadster with 6k. I wrote the check immediately.

I love it but there is not much of a mod community with these things it seems. I am a mod addict but i have
resolved not to chop up anything on this bike, like i did with my last two. Mirrors and signals are in the works

He did not have the plastic luggage rails/rack that i see. I want to fit this bike with a top case so it can be my grocery getter
and i can take it off for the twisties if i want to. (looove the look of the side cases but i dont like price tag!)

REALOEM.com lists over $300 for the side rails and the plastic tail rack. Wondering if there is anywhere else i should try?
Beemer boneyard is out of stock

Also want a Y pipe but refuse to spend 400+ on one so i might be running stock exhaust for a while.

thanks, and ride safe

p.s. whats a thread without pics, so see a couple parking lot pics. Exhaust is off because im evaluating my options
let me know if the pics dont work

Welcome.

Tan seat! Nice.

Rails and tail plate are usually unremovable fixtures on the R. They usually don't get parted out for sale.
Salvage yards are the best bet for used, and yes, OEM is expensive. (wait till you price the OEM bags! $300 each!)

The rack, rails, and bags is a 1k new OEM farkle.

Thanks for the warm welcome. What do you mean unremoveable? Do the rails get welded to the subframe or something?

I'm confused why his bike came without them

No, they are an option at showroom sale time, but they are rarely removed at re-sale.
(sorry for using "unremovable", but I have never seen a resale R that removed them. )

The locking bags are a great option, and they are usually a package that travels with the bike, resale after resale.

The reason your bike does not have them is because they did not ship to showroom with them, they are added on later by the original buyer. (usually rolled up into financing)

They were an option, that's all. Your bike most likely does not have them because the original buyer didn't want them.
(The entire package was a grand extra remember)

Nice Roadster,...Enjoy! Just curious ?, how roomy are those Eclipse soft bags?

As far as mods?...watch the buy/sell,classifieds ebay, IBMWR marketplace, beemerboneyard, etc. It might take some time, but you'll find what ya want.

I have an "04" , I've lowered the pegs, raised the bars, and have a Sargent seat....all made for more comfort. Put a Wunderlich Sport fairing,& spoiler ,..like it allot, few other items to my liking. Some guys say their fine as delivered...all personnel opinion / need I suppose.

I came across a Remus "Y" pipe & muffler, @ about 1/2 price, mine came with bags, and I added a Givi rack to use a trunk I already had, when I need the room.

I have a 2004 'red one' just like yours (28K miles) with a Givi windscreen. I got my rails on eBay. Just type in 'R1150' or 'R1150R' as your category - about 1500 items will come up! Just keep checking back from time to time. Parts from parted-out R's do show up there from time-to-time.

Congratulations on your 'new' bike.

Makes sense, thanks for clearing that up for me.

Found rack and rails from a nice member here, shards.

They are not that roomy, but not too bad either. I tend to like expandable tank and tail units

I went grocery shopping the other day and got a bag of vegetables, a can of minced garlic,
2 packs of hamburger buns, 1 pack of hot dog buns. those all fit fine. I also stupidly bought 3 large bags of tortilla chips and had to pop 2 of them to make them
fit and carry the third under my shirt on the way home

The thing i dont like about them is that i am vain and its my first single sided swingarm bike and i dont like to cover up that pretty wheel.
Shards is being generous and giving me a tail rack back and a pillion bag with what i bought, so they will be my new grocery storage units until i can afford hard bags

Can you reccomend a place to buy? direct from sargeant? And how do you like it? I have one on my ducati and along with levers its the best change ive made to the bike. The difference is for that bike its 3-400 and for the roadster they look like they are more along the lines of $600

I sold my 1150R a few days ago. I happen to have a mint condition set of bags that I no longer need. Trouble is the fellow I bought them from sold his bike and kept the bags so there is no key with them. They are in the latched position so a locksmith will have to make a new key or pick the locks open for you. You can then pop the lock cylinders out and rekey them to the bike's ignition key. They are the full size bags which will require an exhaust canister lowering kit available elsewhere. Or you can reinstall the R1150R specific inner case half for the left side and leave your exhaust system as is. I'll sell all this including a bag of rivets for $350 plus shipping. The reflectors and BMW badges are included. These bags are about $800 or so new as you might know.
