Heated Grips Replace

I wear Elkskin Roper gloves (IE: abrasive palms) and at 50K my handgrips are almost gone. THe replacement grips from BMW will put me back $220+. Has anyone removed the rubber cover on the grip and replaced it. I know about things like the grip puppies but really don't want to increase the diameter of the grips.

I want to recommend grip puppies even if you don't really want them Its cheap and easy compared to all alternatives and you'll get used to the increased diameter in no time. That's real easy for me to say wearing size XXXL gloves..
