Backrests?

Post by karamazov2 »

I'm not finding anything. Anyone have any suggestions for passenger backrests (non-topcase.) I'd be interested in seeing any DIY jobs too.

Corbin, buy the seat and a nice back rest is optional. It's a real nice set up, backrest plugs into the seat with no extra brackets. Clean and neat.

I've seen that one, but I don't really need a new seat. 3k miles on the stock comfort saddle with no complaints. I just need a backrest for the lady.

Pirates lair has one that attaches to the luggage rack if you have one.

You mean this one that appears to be discontinued?

I'm in the same boat as karamazov2; I've been looking for a backrest for my girlfriend, but can't seem to find anything that seems reasonable.

The BAKUP Backrest seems to be available, assuming the RT model will fit the rack on the R, but at $350+, a top-case starts looking more and more appealing as it also provides some storage.

I'm seriously considering trying to cobble something together myself that bolts to the luggage rack somehow.

Karamasov: You should consider adding the rear rack if you are carrying a woman, since the rack/bag mounts have great passenger grab-handles. It is expensive but worth it. Once you have the rack you can add a small top case as a backrest. If the BMW case is just too expensive for you, try the one I bought from JC Whitney for only $65. It mounts a bit clunkier, but holds useful stuff, and my wife finds it just great as a backrest. I've been using it for almost 3 years, and I'm quite happy with it.

Yeah, I'm gonna take a look this weekend at making something myself. I do have an inquiry out to Corbin about a backrest only option, and I'll post any reply I receive. I'm not horribly fond of the topbox/luggage rack options, but I suppose I may have to make a compromise at some point, for the lady's sake. C'est la vie. If I do go that route, I'll probably opt for the smallest Givi case (26L) - they're reasonably priced and look ok. The BMW topcases are ridiculously overpriced - if I can nab one off Beemer Boneyard or Ebay, I'd consider it, but $500+ for a top case I'm only buying for the backrest is a little steep.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Alec, let me know if you come up with any DIY ideas.

Try looking at the SHAD top cases. They are OEM supplier for the F800 bags so they are a good aesthetic match for the bike. Had the 40 ltr one on my R1150R and was very happy with the topcase.

+1 on the SHAD product. They are very similar to the Givi but you don't have to have the key to open and close it, only if you want to lock it.

Hi
I have a r1200r classic 2012, I fitted a Pirates Lair back rest off of a RT. It works well but no good for luggage, so I fitted a Touratech rack and bolted the top part of the Pirates Lair back rest on it all so fixed a Givi fitting kit to it, so I can fit any Monokey box now my wife has a back rest all the time
