Help with windshield install on a '12 R12R

Post by mchad »

Just got a sport windscreen kit for my 2012 R1200R, which came with no installation instructions (naturally). It appears pretty self explanitory, with one exception. There is a piece of plastic trim that covers the panel between the headlight and the cluster. The bracket for the screen mounts to a section underneath this trim. I can't figure out how to tighten the front two bolts, and still be able to replace this trim. Does the instrument cluster need to come off?

Anyone who has done this, if you could throw me a couple of suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

It's basically 4 bolts, and I'd hate to pay the dealer to do this...

This shows the two holes the mount bolts to (with the appropriate clips) right between the two "connectors" - The trim basically covers all the wiring.

Here is a diagram showing the problem area. I can’t figure out how to get at the two front bolts, which screw into clips installed just north of #10, and still have the plastic trim piece, #9 that covers the trim panel in place. You can’t get the trim panel on once the bracket is installed, and you can’t install the bracket with the panel on... A conundrum…

Awesome. Got a hold of a page from the service manual showing the install procedure. You remove the headlight bucket and install the front screws from the bottom! In a million years that would never have occured to me.

Nice.

I have recently installed a Wunderlich Touring screen and had to remove the stock sport screen. I found that by removing the head lamp I could install the trim piece and still have access to the bolts that mount the screen (sport or Wundrlich) to the support bracket. Hope this helps.

Love the search function… thanks...

Completed the sport screen bracket mount but I can't install the screen with the hardware that was provided... seems like there should be some rubber grommets, because the screen is "loose" when the metal inserts are placed through the holes.

Thoughts on what I'm missing or doing wrong... or simply not getting it? #-o

There definitly are rubber bushings (or grommets) that go in the holes in the screen, before you insert the hardware. They look just like part #2 in the schematic in my original post. You're missing parts...

Also, in your photo, the bottom set of screws and inserts are in the right direction. The metal insert is pushed in the rubber bushing (wide side up/forward), and the screw goes in next, so that the screw is tightening against the metal insert, not the plastic windscreen...

Thanks again mchad... I contacted the dealer and sure enough, the bushings are not included in the install kit.... 4 bushings cost $11 ... must be that special BWM rubber :-k The only thing he could think of is that it might be considered a replacement part and the bushings from the original would be used...
