NY to CO

I am planning a two week ride in July from Rochester NY to Colorado and back. I want to avoid toll roads and major cities traffic jams. Camping along the way as much as possible. Does anyone have recommendations on roads to take or avoid? I figure 3 days to CO, a week there (staying with a friend near Denver) and 3 days back.

Consider U.S. 34 across Nebraska or U.S. 36 across Missouri and Kansas.
Just northwest of Lebanon, KS is a small park that is the location of the geographical center of the conterminous U.S. - or something like that. It's a pleasant little primitive camping spot and photo opportunity. CamFarm and I camped there on our way back from Boise, ID in 2006. Your plan is giving me ideas!

I estimate that's about 1600 miles of super slab in three days, which is a mighty fine daily mileage without back roads and stopping to set up/strike camp. I would re-evaluate the time/speed/distance aspect of your trip. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

Yes, I suspect you are right. Perhaps it will be more like three nights and four days of riding to get there.
