oil cooler stone damage?

hi all
10 weeks of ownership and already one ding in the core of the oil cooler and one in the fins, thought the one was bad luck and now two , one looks like it has come off the front wheel and the other off a car wheel or bike . i do not get close to others so not sure , big hunt today and went to a industrial window company and sourced some mesh , had a choise of metal or heatproof plastic type mesh , went for the latter .easy to cut , no sharp edges , bingo easy to fit and happy again ,no more worrying about the poor rad and b***** stones .
sadly they would only sell me 8ft by 6 ft sheets , so to make it worth my while i bought 2 sheets, black and one champagne , i now have done my ducati rad as well , that one is a little higher than the 1200 r . i cannot see why the 1200r does not have a screen or mesh to protect anyway .
i now have enough to do about 15 r1200 rads . so anyone want one let me know by pm, will post worldwide . around 10 dollars or £6 uk money,post on top . i will cut to size the same as mine .
i will do some pics to follow in a hour or two.

I guess there would have to be some reduction in airflow, but doubt if it would be enough to impact cooling. However, I have 22K on my 05 RT and really have never given a screen a serious thought. I just wash the bugs out when I wash the bike.

I just purchased a protector from Wunderlich. It is solid construction and looks fantastic on the R1200R.

BMW should have left the same cooler design of the R1150R. Not sure why they went back to the cooler behind the front wheel. Bit unsightly compared to the integrated tank cooler and more vulnerable to damage.

You must have some real bad luck!
Over 70,000 miles on my 12R, with about 25,000 of those miles ridden on gravel/rock/dirt roads, and yet not one dent in my oil cooler to this day.

I do like your low cost DIY solution even though I've not seen any need for one myself. Looks great, and shouldn't hurt anything.

Must have came up from somewhere else since I don't believe it's possible for the front wheel to kick up a rock high enough to hit the oil cooler, now mud is another story but that's hardly how the designers intended the bike to be ridden now is it?....







As for the oil cooler location being "better" on the 1150R, I disagree having owned both bikes, but that's personal taste and that discussion was beat to death - about 5 years ago.

Same here. Been on a few gravel roads and never a problem . I do have a Fender Extender on the front fender. Lower half of cooler was packed with mud and on a ride from Cape Breton to Jersey (including a traffic jam in NYC) the temperature was hardly affected:

ha ,thats how to treat a bike eh ,i think you need some knobblies .must be quite slippy.
i must have some bad luck on the radiator. think you have been lucky ,you only need a stone to flick up off of someone else etc ,
i am in the wifes car two days back and no cars around and bang a stone hit the side window , now where has that come from.

strange that mud on the rear fender , its the wind as you ride along turbulence , used to get filthy in the rain on the gs ,all up the back of legs .
