R1200R Temperature Reading

My 2007 R1200R has always read one bar over the middle. I would think the temp is ok but that the gauge reads high. On the other hand it is German and may be right. I have an infra red temperature gun. Where should I point it and what should it read under what circumstances? The oil cooler screen is clean. The directing air winglets are in place. Outside temperatures vary from 40's to 90's.

I don't know where to point an IR temp gun to get an accurate reading, but one bar over middle is in the normal range. There are two little tick marks on the temp display, and in between those is normal operating temp.

As a side note: which oil are you using? I get slightly different running temps with different oils.

Edit (addition): running temp also depends on where I ride. Going a constant 75mph on the interstate, going uphill swiftly with braking into curves and accelerating out of them, heavy stop and go traffic: all these put an extra bar on the display for me. Does any of these describe your mainly found riding conditions?

Mine is generally right at the middle, i.e. at the first tick mark, but the stated conditions may put it one bar above that. It will also go back to the middle if I ride long enough in 'normal' conditions.

I think my temps are fine. Dealer services, don't remember what oil; on my big twin Victory I can tell when it's hot by the heat radiating to my legs. Never have that on the R12. I think I'll get the temp gun out and just start taking readings of the heads etc as warms up and see where it all comes out.
