Carbon Cylinder Head Cover

Post by jkhomes »

My cylinder head cover got pretty scraped up when a friend bumped me the other day. I saw a carbon fiber set up on a HP2 and found out BMW has one that will fit an R1200R. The bad news is that they are $380, each side. There appears to be some aftermarket ones made for much less. Does anyone have experience with these?

And oh, I want an HP2. There is a used one here with 1,700 miles, for $17,000.

I'd jump all over the HP2. I used to have one.

Obviously the thing to do is purchase the HP2. It's ridculous to pay $700 just for the cylinder head covers. :)

Jkhomes, Have you explored the BMW Aluminium Covers (Part # 71607716422)or the new Machineartmoto creations? ( http://machineartmoto.com/shopsite_sc/XHDOHC.html ) The machineartmoto ones look good. The BMW ones come with rubber buffers which mount between the cylinder and the guard.

I have the BMW ones, and I can tell you its saved my a$$ already, having dropped my bike conducting a slow speed maneouvre which didnt quite come off. It didnt help that I was riding on a badly twisted ankle! The bike pivoted on the cylinder guard and on inspection of the bike, nothing more than a minor scuff on the edge of the guard. A dented ego was a lot more than the damage sustained. The guards are worth every dollar!

I sure agree with you FJM. You should see the protective cover from the slide I was involved in. Thanks for the link to the Machineartmoto. I am still leaning towards the very expensive BMW carbon fiber, but have not been able to rationalize the expense just yet.

New engine covers cost $197 left and $188 right, not bad considering that you would want to replace the carbonfiber one if it got scraped up.
