Engine blown - experiences with oil?

surely I'ld have noticed leaks everywhere wouldn't I. The story moves on, BMW warranty have said it's not a warranty issue, the level of oil use sounds OK to them. missing the point rather, it's not the oil use that's the issue, it's the total failure of the bike to warn me that my engine was so hot it was about to blow.Brendan

I would think that with all the magic stuff in the computer the engine would shut down if it was dangeriously hot.

So it isn't much from below the center line to the center line...I've been keeping it at the center line....is it to the top of the window? I use very damn little at about 13,000 plus miles...I run what they tell me at the dealer...out of the ground oil; but I think they are using 20/50 now and switched out from some other weight...it's too far to the garage to advise....but it was a different wt spec'ed at the dealer for changes last year...they are selling cases of the old wt at a discount for now...go figure..I don't think the motor much cares as long as it's the good stuff and changed at 6K..and kept around the center too. I don't check it on the center stand unless I'm really getting serious. I peak every other time or so and when I come back from a ride...on the side stand usually...if I can see oil in the sight glass I figure I'm good. I add when it gets much below center line and that would be about 3 ounces maybe...

I mean this bike is just so much to maintain...get the bugs off the windshield, check the tire pressure...put the good gas in and it the road...if it ever stops working I'm going to be really surprised. That said I do keep a small jumper cable under the seat since my one time brain fade when I didn't pull the key....

I don't think any engine would be allowed to "shut down" in order to preserve it, I believe it would be from a safety point of view in case you are overtaking etc etc etc.

It’s all a question of regular maintenance and due diligence.
