I have the BMW side case - grab bar - luggage rack brackets installed. The side cases are ordered and should be here soon.

My question is if I decide to order the rear luggage case, how does it attach to the luggage rack? Does it scratch up the painted rack cover or do you remove the cover? Pics of the system and how it works?

I put a Shad SH 33 top case on my bike and it works very nice. I had to attach the mounting plate to the rear rack to mount the case. The advantage of the BMW case is that it mounts directly to the rear rack. I leave the case on the bike all the time so the mounting plate does not bother me. The Shad case cost $50 vs $350 for the BMW case.

Both the BMW system top cases have some L-shaped fingers that slide in below the rack and as you move the case toward the front of the bike they hold down the case to the front. There are some lock fingers that do the same thing on the rear of the cases when you close the take-off handle.

The design is such that there is no scratching of the rack cover, which remains in place at all times.

I pull my top case on & off all the time. No sratches.

What's BMW's top box rack made from?

I want to see if I can adapt it to fit a givi box. Would it stand drilling and tapping?

No drilling or taping of rack. Just need to create some blocks for under it to hold Givi mount. See elsewhere on the list for details. Mine has survived cross country trip fully loaded.
