GS rear seat on an R and rear frame questions

Post by ICBMguy »

I'm thinking about putting a 1100GS or 1150GS rear seat/luggage carrier on my 2000 R1100R. I think it will allow me to put a GS rear rack/top case on easier than trying to find the "perfect" 1100R rear rack. Plus it will allow me to more efficiently pack the rear "luggage carrier" in place of my forever unused pillion seat. (The Mrs. doesn't ride with me)

Yes, the seats are completely different, but the rear frame is the same as the rear frame pictured for the 1150GS in my Clymer's manual, so it should fit if I remove the rear grab handle and the R seat/centering post and replace with the 1150GS seat, right? Here's the rub, the Clymer's shows the picture for my 1100R's rear frame as the same for the 1100GS...except the frame that is actually ON my bike matches the picture of the 1150GS rear frame. :?:

So do I have a "one off" R1100R with an R1150GS rear frame? Is the Clymer's picture wrong? (likely) And which, if any, GS rear luggage carrier/seat fit?

A colleague of mine back here in Germany did this on his R1100R. Have a look at his Blog http://kabierschke.net/system-cgi/blog/ and scroll down to "09/03: Die Gepäckbrücke der R1100GS"

Thanks! Those are a lot of the same mods I'm considering. Interesting though, that he went back to the stock rear after awhile. Perhaps it's not as good an idea as I first thought... :-k

Yeah, he went back to stock on a couple of mods for certain reasons (comfort, style, durability) .. Whatever. Depends on what you would like to achieve ... Many things are doable because many BMW parts are interchangeable ...

I've done it to mine. You will have clearance problems if you have the BMW bag rails installed and even though the baggage porter fits the R1100R sub-frame the GS tool tray is not compatible with the R1100R rear fender. I have a Best Rest plate on mine and the tool bag that comes with it does fit. I have no idea if the GS seat will fit since I don't have one, I ride this one solo.
