Is this the right place?

I heard it was.
I just picked up a 2000 R1100RT. Black, with 32k on the clock. It's still a bit chilly 'round these parts, but I'm loving the heated gear and grips.

I have a few bikes, and I've riding for many years, mostly DS and dirt.
I was ready for a great commuter bike and a sport-tourer. I love the way this bike feels.

I'll pop in to get info from time to time and to ask the dumb question. BMWs are new to me. They are strange, yet awesome beasts.

First question: I need a spare key, I only have one. Is it a dealer only item?

I got a key blank from the dealer and had a local locksmith grind it to match the original. (The dealer had a grinder, but their copy didn't work.)

Probably slightly cheaper to get a blank on Ebay.
Bring to local locksmith, he'll tell you that he cannot guarantee that the key will work since it's not his blank but it all worked fine for me.

Our keys are made from stainless steel, not the chromed brass blanks normally used. A regular locksmith can cut a copy, but it is harder and uses up a lot more of their grinding wheel, so they may charge more.

An alternative I've heard about is to get a blank for a BMW M3 (car), which is made of chromed brass. It is cheaper to buy and easier to cut, but not nearly as durable. However for a spare it should be fine.
