Re: gearbox number
You'd be able to find the same on the right hand side of your gearbox behind the intake manifold.

Re: gearbox number
Joe, the gearbox was changed in 1997 (indicating M97) to overcome certain problems of the earlier versions.

Re: gearbox number
From Anton's oilhead site:
The M94 was used from 10/1993 through 03/1996. Undercuts eliminated, pointed shift spline used on first gear to aid engagement. Rubber O-rings were used between the gears and the cluster/output shafts, to quiet the clatter. Anecdotally, this made shifting worse. Towards the end of the M94 series, clean ball bearings were added to the input shaft starting with transmissions 10483DAF, 10776DAH, 12958DAK, 12650DAL, 12405DAG, 7864DAJ, 131DCF, and 101DCH. Clean bearings were used everywhere starting with transmissions [Dx]Q, R, S, T, U, V. Interchangeable with M97

Re: gearbox number
Here are the codes for the 1100 models:
DAC: 1993 - 1994
DAF (silver) and DAH (black): from 1994
DAG to DAM: silver for 1100 GS/RT (2 different silver colors DAG one color, DAM the other)
DAJ to DAN: the variants prior to new bearings, partly without o-rings
EAQ (silver) and DAR (black): model-year 1996 (new bearings on the 3 axles)
EAA (silver) and EAB (black): from model-year 1997 (new claws, no o-rings)
EAF (black): from model-year 1997, with neutral and gear indicator, parts for GS/RT models
Yours is a DAK hence definitely pre-1996.

Re: gearbox number
Hi Oliver
partly without o-rings
thanks again for the info, i do feel im getting somwhere with all this research, im not sure what the information will help with but i do feel im getting to know the bike, also i do seem to enjoy getting my bikes running as good as i can.
so i take it from what you posted mine is the one partly without o-rings, is this good or not so good? what do you think?
im on the bike every day and the gearbox i feel is running great, makes all the right noises at the right times.
any thoughts would be welcome

Re: gearbox number
Joe,
if your gear box shifts well and makes the right noises you don't need to worry at all. Just keep on ridin and enjoyin yourself. All the oilhead gearboxes feel clunky no matter whether pre-1997 or post 1997. The pre-1997 ones had more failures than post 1997. But again if yours shifts well don't spend a thought on this.

Re: gearbox number
Thanks Oliver
what your saying makes sense and i need not worry to much, i think its just the way i am with bikes, i seem to try to fix any problems before they happen. iv had several bikes starting with my first big bike (honda CBX 750) this was almost 20 years old when i got it. had it for a few years, fixed it up with new cam chains, replaced the shocks and swing arm on the rear, then sold it.
i had a honda CBR 600 (1995) it ran like clockwork for 5 years then traded it in for a honda fireblade, it was the last of the 918cc (2000) models. the bike was amazing, very light and would stick to the road like glue. i then traded that in to get this BMW, for me the BM is great and dont regret loosing the fireblade.
im not to worred about the gearbox, if it goes it goes and then i will have to do somthing. I think i must like the research part of it, lots on the net have somthing to say about the infamous M94 .
well thatks for listening to my ongoing M94 anxietties, im sure i will be well prepared if and when the M94
starts to rumble

Re: gearbox number
Unfortunately that is something you can't fix before it happens. It means ripping your bike apart and totally dismantling your gearbox. It is a costly exercise. And to do this in anticipation of a fault - which may happen or not is not worth it. If faults happen then you will still have to consider shelling out this money (or buying a used gearbox which are offered on the www from time to time).
