Hello guys its my first post here...i am new to bmw bikes...and i'm new in north america...i just moved to canada and have couple of questions about the r1200r ...My previous experience on bikes goes like this...at 13 my first bike with 4 gears a russian productuon max speed 95 km/h ...)..i couldn't ride the bike on legal rods cause of my age ...lol...after that i bought some legal scooters and at 18 the golden age got a cbr 600 preped for racing ...the best bike i ever had ...after that i owned and 600 f4i and a 600 rr...this is my little history...i'm 24 now and i love the look the sound and how everybody describes the r1200r and i'm thinking that i need to change the style since i'm married and i wanna explore canada on 2 wheels...What should i know before i make the purchase : issues , known problems , insurance cost etc...if someone can help me put here i will appreciate..Importing from the states ? buy new or used? found couple of bikes near toronto..16.700 and 17.700 brand new one of them is fully loaded...

I can't comment on price in Canada - I know they are generally higher then the US. Also don't know what's involved on importing one from the US - I've had friends do it with cars, and there were some general changes that had to be made (daylight running lights for one.. not a bike issue), and they needed a letter of conformity from BMW-NA in the US. That might be the harder problem.
There are no real "issues" or "problems" with the R1200R except getting off it - once you're on it you want to RIDE.. insurance cost - unknown to me, but your best bet is to contact some companies that write motorcycle insurance in Canada and ask.

Thanks for the link there are some things like the dash that looks better but thats not gonna be a factor in buying the bike , money is ... Anybody know how much more torque or hp the new model is gonna have ??

No real difference from the '07-'10 bikes. The engine makes something like 1HP more. It develops about the same torque, but at a bit lower RPM. It's not significantly different in performance.

Sasha, I live just 100k N/E Toronto and I am 56, with an02 1150RT, I too rode as a kid, but I never got my official motorcycle license until this summer.I took the course offered at the local college, to ease insurance costs. They still kicked me in the knee hard, $1200.00 hard. I bought used, for price, found a good bike 400 k away. The "BMW Group " of people are very different, they are aware of what they own, confident in there selection, and the most meticuless group of automotive owners I have ever seen.None of the used bikes I looked at were bad bikes....you could either afford it or not, there was never much room for dickering , the motorcycle sold itself. Welcome the country, and most of all welcome to the group, awesome info here. One bit of info on riding gave me a leg up on my riding, so much so I bought into the group right away, and have never looked back. Feel free to contact me at anytime, but there are people here that have more information that you can ever imagine, just ask, you will be amazed.

Thanks for the usefull information and for the warm welcome....I already have a bike license from back home but they wont recognize it ( the car license they did and i'm G full already ) so i have to get the m1 in january and then the m2 ...prepare for spring and get the bike then...
Sasha, In the grand province of Ontario(tongue in cheek) your M1 is only good for 90 days, you must move up to M2 after the 90th day. I took my course shortly after I wrote the the M1, and had to wait till the 90th day to update my lic. Now if you have had your bike license for some time, try to keep as much info of it as you can. The insurance companies will rate you on how many years you have had your license. Do try to shop around for bike insurance, I jumped a little to quick, I went to "my insurance guy" and they only deal with one company, and I paid quickly to get the job done, I wanted to ride......now. I now know that there is some cheaper places, will check when mine is up.... I have 24 inches of snow in back yard, if your in the city you have nothing, what about where you come from, would they have lots?

Thank's for the reply...i hope i can get the insurance companies to recognize my license from Romania...i've been riding since i was 18 i'm 24 now ...so 6 years of experience there...there is some snow in the part where i grew up but something like 3 inches once and then another day of snow and thats it for the winter...but it is cold last year we had a record of -28....how many months you guys ride in ontario ?...
Sasha When I was looking for a bike I was looking in the New York/ Pennsylvania area as well. When I checked into it I found out it would be under a thousand dollars to bring up a BMW. They pass all the requirements in stock form. Not all manufacturers do. There is an agency of the gouvernment that you can check. It is a lot of paperwork to bring one over but, if you have just emigrated from another country then you know all about paperwork. I rode up until 2nd week of Dec, and I will now wait for the first good rain to wash the salt off the roads....then I'm bustin' out.

Is it worth the 1000 bucks...couldn't you find one in ontario ?...if there is nothing arround here i will consider bringing one , i don't mind paper work ...question is duty is 13% or 19% because they are build in germany...? i know with cars if they are not build in north america you pay extra 6 %...maybe i'm wrong i don't know.. Nice to hear that you ride so late i mean december , i'm a little bit skeptic about cold wheater and riding bikes...
