New (to me) R1200R -- need seat advice

Picked up an 07 R12R at San Jose BMW today. Very, very nice black with pinstripes. Mint condition. I'm having stability control added.

It has a low seat, and I'm coming from a 12GS and want a tall seat on this bike. I'm 6' ... the regular height seat is OK, but I'd like to go 1/2" to 3/4" taller. Don't want to spend $400 either.

A swap to a regular/tall would work. What are after-market options that don't cost a fortune?

I happen to know that the the seat that you bought is definitely new and correct for an R1200R. It came from an auction that I was also at. It was from the showroom of Moto Marin. The eBay seller outbid me for that particular seat. I did buy a couple of others and sold them here in the classified section.

Yup. Basically, all the ABS equipped bikes already come with it -- but it's deactivated. What is needed is the left switchgear (with the defeat button) and a code that the service department enters into the computer. The code comes from BMW and is VIN-specific so that we can't hack it to work without paying. The stability control takes the data from the ABS sensors and the engine management system will cut ignition when it thinks it needs to.

Quotes to have it done range from $500 to $700, parts and labor. I got the lower end of the range since I was buying a used bike.

I believe that DonE attempted to have ASC retrofitted on his `07. It was not possible for his build month. You may want to look for that topic thread here.

I found a list of chassis numbers somewhere online and mine was after the relevant build date. My bike was built sometime in the fall of 2006...

So was mine - but still undoable. Mine was manufacturered 10/06, and the VIN appeared to be OK. Probably the same list/build date.

Turns out you need a BMS-KP engine module, not the BMS-K that mine has. The switch was actually sometime during early 2007 production. BMW itself is uncertain about the install cutoff date. The only way to REALLY check - pull the tank and see if your engine control module says BMS-K or BMS-KP. KP is the good one.

The only way to do it if you have the original engine module is to replace the module with a new one (you can't use a used one - even though I see them for sale on Flea-Bay, and I actually had one) since they are a one-time programmed to the VIN#. There is no way to reuse one. (That comes from BMW-Motorrad-Germany..)

You might suggest to the dealer they check this before they pay BMW the $350 or so they pay for the unlock code. Turns out - it's probably not returnable (they download it, and once downloaded, it's theirs,) so they've just wasted ~$350 (plus the time to R&R the left side control, and try to program it.)

Overall - it cost my dealership something over $600 in time/parts/labor to not install it on my bike. Both of us were unhappy with the result.

My VIN ends in 25436. The dealer showed me the BMW technical bulletin that said that the VIN has to be 25572 or higher in order to retrofit ASC. I think my build date was November 2006 but I can't put my hands on that right now.

Could be right. Mine is 25482 - 10/06 production. Unfortunately - when I they tried mine, it still came up as OK to add with BMW's computer.. even though it wasn't.

Let us know if you are successful - if so I'll do it to mine, but it doesn't sound promising based on Don's experience.

SJ BMW confirmed that they cannot add stability control to this bike. I bought it anyway. It's too darn nice (6k miles; black w/pinstripes) and I got for only $8300. Too good to pass up.
