new bike problem
Hi all im new,,,,just got myself an r1100r, love the bike its very comfee after the fire blade....i picked up a 1995 with only 6000 on the clock,,,,had all the oils changed but when i went to get the timing done i was told i need new cam chanes as the ones in it wer stiff due to lack of use,,,,,cost me a bit but its done now,,,,,,any other things i shud look out for,,,,would be greatfull for any tips,,,,,
Re: new bike problem
Watch out for the V-Belt which needs to be changed every 50 000 kms (under the black front cover of the engine). Also check that the zip-ties around the front are not too tight as these usually lead to broken wires and all sort of electrical probs. Obviously changing the fluids (including brake fluid) is always a good idea ... Also check with the previous owner when the fuel filter was last changed and get this done as well if older than 2 yrs or 20 000 kms.

Re: new bike problem
yes iv done all the oils and had to get the cam chains done as they wer stiff,,,the bike had been standing for years in a shop and only had 6300 miles when i got it, the cams chains and time cost me a bit but its done now so hopfily it will be ok....i have all the service history and it adds up so seems to be ok....just wanted to ask about fuel, im getting around 100 miles around town for around 12 liters of petrol ,,,,is this normal,,,,?
Re: new bike problem
Personally I don't think this is normal. The 1100 oilheads did not consume more than maybe 6L per 100 kms. On the racetrack more but if you commute around town shouldn't be more than 6 or 6.5 L per 100 km. Hence I presume the fuel mix is too rich. I would get the injection system checked as well as having a look at the color coded plug under your seat ... Can't be a clogged fuel filter because then the mix would not be rich.

thanks for your idears,,,what is the color coded plug under the seat for,,,
Re: new bike problem
i just put the miles in a converter, for 12 liters of fuel, distance covered 100 miles im getting 37.88 mpg, (UK imperial) if i put 11 litres in it come back with 41.33 mpg.....so maybe it needs some agustment somwhere,,,,the bike has only done just over 6k miles, would this affect the fule used as it may still be running in, i have read that it takes around 16000 before the engin is run in.....any thoughts....

Re: new bike problem
Joe,
as I said, your bike should not be consuming more than 6 liters per 100 kms. 100 km = approx 62 miles and 1 liter = approx 0,26 gallons.
If your bike consumes considerably more there is something wrong. Either with the fuel supply or with the air supply. Could also be one of the sensors (the air-sensor which is on top of the air filter or the lambda sensor in your exhaust.
The color coded plug under your seat (depending on the country) should be: US Version = light rosé. EU version beige or rosé or brown.

Re: new bike problem
Adjusting the carb on a R1100R?
That's interesting cause this bike has a fuel injection and no carb ... How much did you pay for the carb adjustment?

Oh I see. Probably your bike got sync'd. Hope this solved your problem. Keep us updated. With regards to the colored plug under your seat I mentioned this for you to check if it is there and which color you have.

Re: new bike problem
hi oliver, i do have a plug,,,its cream in coulor, dose this meen anything to you?
Re: new bike problem
Hiya,
I'm not sure if this applies to the R1100R, but I've read the R1100RS (pre 1997) has transmission problems, which were fixed in 1997.
I think what he means by "carbs" is that the throttle bodies were synced?
Cheers,

have a look at this article: http://www.ibmwr.org/r-tech/oilheads/R1 ... ixes.shtml and this http://www.largiader.com/articles/motronic.html
The beige plug was used mainly in the following models (all ECE): R1100R/GS and R850RT 1994-
If I was you I would try to pull the plug and try riding without it. Then as an alternative try getting the yellow and the rose colored one from any of the salvage specialists or e bay (don't buy from your dealer as these thingies are overprized). Then try those and see how it goes.
If you are still having probs get your biked checked as the hall sensor, ignition coils, O2 sensor and other sensors may be the cause.
