BMW R1200R Gas Mileage?

I currently own a Suzuki M50, 800 cc, that I use to commute to work with. My ride is 28 miles one way mostly freeway. I also go on 2 or 3 long weekend rides a year. These rides cover the back roads and twisties. However most of my riding is my commute to and from work. I live in Northeast, Ohio so I get to ride about 7 months a year. Somewhere down the road I am going to replace the M50 and I was looking at the BMW R1200R to be the replacement. My M50 cruses the freeway at 4200 RPM at 65 MPH. That is the typical speed that I drive on the freeway. The M50 gets around 53 miles per gallon for my commute. What gas mileage can I expect from the BMW R1200R? I know that the BMW has a larger motor but I am hoping that it would get at least 50 MPG. Is this possible? Any information would be great.

My highway rides at 65 - 75 usually returns mileage in the mid 50s. I hit 60 + twice since I've had the bike. Same highway mileage as my Suzuki DR650. FI is a good thing!

Imperial gallons for me - high 40's mpg in the city and seen up to 63 mpg in the country. Quite blown away by how efficient this bike is on the highway - competitive with my old F800ST. In the city, though, the extra weight & displacement adds up.

I usually get low 30's around town (daily commute is 5 miles), and low- to mid-40's on the highway.

The answer depends a lot how well behaved your right wrist is....


Mine runs in the 50's when treated well, and less depending on how aggressive the throttle is used.

My riding style is much like yours and I get exactly 50 mpg, buy the on board computer, and my own calculations, good luck. Hank

If I ride with mpg in mind, in the country without lights or traffic, going at the speed limit, then I get 53mpg. As soon as I go up a hill it drops. If I pass hard it drops. Around town I get 47-48mpg most of the time.

Agreed re right wrist ... but I have a pretty gentle wrist, actually.

Guess it's just me, or just my particular bike. :-)

I get a average of 57 per the little MPH screen on the bike. Its been as low as 54 on a couple tanks. I'm pretty easy with the wrist most of the time and have made it a game to see what I can get on all my cars and motorcycles.

I have a 2 season average of 45 MPG on my 2008 R1200R (black, of course). I have spent a weekend that felt like a 2 day roller coaster ride in the Buckeye Hills of southeast Ohio and can confirm the R1200R handles with high levels of pleasure in those twisty hills. I think you'll be happy.

Wow mid 50's out of a DR650? I had a jetted airbox modded 2003 and only got low 40's??? As for my r12r I run in the high 40's low 50's

I rarely get over 43mpg. Draw from that what you will.

40 to 43 mpg with supposedly max 10% ethalone gasoline. Without about 10% more. According to computer average speed between 55 to 60 miles. rider weight 220 lbs. Height 6.2. With continous head wind 37 to 40 mpg. My bike has the BMW sports windshield.
Have only gotten one time 50 mpg driving in higher altitute at 45 average speed with ethalone free gas.

I'm in CA and where we have some strange additives in the gas, so do not know if it will be a direct correlation. I also primarily commute (challenging country roads). Usually get around 43 mpg.

Mixed freeway/street commute - 43 mph
Sunday morning rides at 45 mph in the hills - 50 mpg
Trailing a bus at 65mph - 55 mpg (per computer)

The computer runs about 1 mpg above what I calculate at the pump.

I would like to know how people get 55 to 60 mpg. Is that measured over an entire tank, or just what they see on the computer for a while after a reset?

I ride very gently, and the only way I see that is to reset the computer while riding at 45, and don' change speeds.
Our California gas does rob you of a few MPG.

I get low 30s in the city, right on 50 on long road trips at 70+. Once I got 60, but that was doing mostly under the speed limit. That's by hand calculation, I don't trust the computer. I'm glad to see other people getting 30s in the city. I thought it was just me.
