Splines look to be in very good condition both inside the clutch disc and on the trans input shaft. (
But the inside splines on the clutch disc had some kind of black dry material that looked like old dried up grease or
something, but was totally dry. I believe that's what caused the trans input shaft to stick inside the clutch splines.
Brushed and cleaned with compressed air.
What could I use for an alignment tool if I disassemble the clutch? I've got an old one I used to use on muscle car
clutches, but I don't imagine there's any way that would fit - I suppose the shaft has got to fit snugly in the flywheel
and mine for sure isn't metric on the end.
I tried to look up the BMW tool # on the A&S website but, of course, it won't come up.
There must be something available - would appreciate info!
Now, how thick should the clutch disc be? After cleaning the clutch, I took a close look and found the rear side of
the lining seems to be maybe .020" thinner than the front side. Stacking some feeler gauges, the rear / thinner side
appears to be about .085" to .090" thick. The bike has 32k on it. I'm trying to avoid spending any unnecessary cash
right now, am laid off and need to conserve (mortgage and all that of course has priority) BUT don't want to pass up
a chance to renew the clutch if it doesn't have too many miles left on it, either.
Appreciate any info from anyone that's replaced a clutch and knows how thick a new one is, etc.
