You always have to have a plan B. When and if things don't work out like they should. Plan B is not or doesn't seem as good as plan A, but it's the next best thing. Especially if you're worried about the day when a large main odometer reading stops for a long while after the transmission input shaft splines disintegrate.
No, I am NOT contemplating plan B, the F800ST is better for me than the OilHead was and I just turned over 6,000 miles (9,656 km) today. As you may have read what I wrote in this F800 section, I think the F800 engine/transmission combo is a quantum leap improvement over the OilHeads. There is NO bike that I would rather have, including the new generation big 4 cylinder BMW's that many here have gushed over. So far, my F800ST has had 2 worrisome incidents, both caused by me overfilling the fuel tank on the sidestand -and- storing a (cooling air blocking) cleaning rag under the seat. Both events caused no lasting damage or required any parts replacements. So, it's been gasoline for 6,000 miles riding with 7 quarts of oil and 2 BMW oil filters. It's a BMW that has never used any oil and always starts immediately in any weather. What little vibration it had when new is almost completely gone now. Very smooth and unbelievably fuel efficient, routinely averaging 62--64 MPG in my normal somewhat easy riding. It has never gone below 58 MPG!!
Now the reason for this post. Plan B, instead of an OilHead, besides an F800ST, but it's made by Honda. I stumbled upon this video of Honda's new to the USA NT700V.

That link is for those who want a bulletproof, well made, good handling, practical, efficient, sport touring bike. When/If something ever does go wrong, Honda will not be in denial of a common problem like fuel line QD's or clutch shaft/disc splines. Add your own 2 stage aftermarket heated grips! With my over 45 years experience with Honda motorcycles, you can plan on keeping it for a decade . . . . with no troubles.

Re: Plan B
I took a long hard look at Honda before I decided on the 800ST.
The VFR 800 was discounted significantly and also looked at the new VFR 1200. The 1200 was very expensive (18k+ out the door) and the saddle bags were extra!
I stayed with the BMW brand for the most part because the F800ST has so far proven to be a reliable model, online support (here), relationship with my local dealer, and brand loyalty. Also, my wife wanted me to stay with the BMW brand.

Re: Plan B
The F800 drivetrain + CANBUS electrics have a lot to offer. Only problem associated with the F800 bikes is the occasional stall issue, but I'm certain that someone will figure out a practical remedy.
While I'm committed to keeping my Rockster on the road, our F800S is also a long-term keeper!

If you ride that Honda, do you have to wear those yellow boots when you ride?

Loud boots save lives....
I think yellow boots would look nice with red camouflage pants and a helmet painted with a big smiley face.

I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...
