Tuning out vibrations?
I just picked up my first BMW motorcycle this weekend and I am completely smitten with it. The bike is a '95 R1100R with almost no defects to speak of. On my 1-hour ride home, I noticed that the bike surges (big surprise, right?
) and the idle is a little lumpy and erratic. Additionally, I get a bit of vibration in the bars at 70 mph. I'm wondering if any of you have been able to tune some these small issues out of the beast through valve adjustments and throttle body synchronization. I intend to tune the bike next weekend, but I want to know if I should be looking for bigger issues? Any feedback would be great and, I know, "they all do that."

Re: Tuning out vibrations?
Check out the IBMWR website for specific tune up suggestions ranging from setting the valve lash wider on the throttle side to adjusting the TB sensor to exact TB balancing. You'll have to work at it. If you're pretty good at wrenching probably reasonable to invest in Twin Max or Carb Tune for synchronizing TB's. Hope this helps. Wardie

Thanks Wardie. I looked over a couple TB sync write-ups and constructed a water manometer last night. I balanced the TBs at idle and 2500 RPMs and this really helped the cold starts and low-end RPM range. I think I'm going to have to give it another session and work on the whole RPM range...I'm still getting a pretty good vibe in the bars at freeway speeds. The improvements I got were encouraging, so it's just another reason to spend another the night in the garage bonding with my new machine.
