How do I remove the mirror on a 1100RT?

Post by racingt »

Hi guys,
I'm a newbie here, only had the bike (1996 R1100RT) two weeks, needs a new battery which motorworks have in the post...
I know I need to remove the LHS fairing cos Haynes tells me unfortunately I have no idea how to remove the mirror, which Haynes unhelpfully tells me nothing about.

I can get a finger behind it, and it seem to come out, but are there clips behind that need to be unclipped? Not happy just pulling, think something will snap!

Advice appreciated, many thanks

racingt, sure- you could do it that way, but that's the easy way! Why would you want to do something the easy way? Here's a better way to remove your R1100RT mirror.

1) Take your bike to a buddy's house, right after you get it. Make sure he is a newbie motorcycle rider.
2) Offer to let him sit on it.
3) Watch in slow motion as he pushes it forward off the centerstand, and inexplicably drops the bike on it's right side.

There you have it! The mirror is off, and you no longer have to worry about polishing the paint on it too much anymore, because it's chewed up from the asphalt. It still pops right back on though, once you put the light bulb back in it's socket.

Hope you don't mind my attempt at humor in response to your post. Oh and I'm a newbie here too, so hi everybody!

Yeh - who needs Haynes or Clymer!
I found out how to take the mirror off my RT by simply backing it in to the garage.
Misjudged, mirror housing hit doorway and straight away the mirror is dangling by a wire - it's that easy!
If you don't want to use the back-in-to-garage method, just grab it and yank it off.
