Thanks for the kind words. It really wasn't so "whirlwind" at all, at least it didn't seem so. I probably averaged over the whole trip about 300+ miles per day, but the roads were so nice, it didn't seem like I was riding too much. Regarding the color...I really didn't see much to speak of until Ohio, which was beautiful. On the way back I saw more, but only in some sports did I think I hit peak color.
Back to the ride...
I leave Hillbilly Hot Dogs, my belly full with Suzy's Flu Shot (wondering if there'll be a special dog for the swine flu--get the vaccine) and headed to Huntington, WV.
I think it was a Super 8 at the top of the hill where I stayed. Again, as I was checking in I was examined for sanity for riding in such weather, and by now, I was so satisfied with myself for actually doing this. When asked the question (Are you really riding in this?), I now reply with a smug yes. I mean it wasn't THAT hard and it was fun in a masochistic sort of way. You know what I mean, right? I can say that, right?
So, I check in and ask the reception clerk where I might eat.
Well, there's a Wendy's down at the bottom of the hill and a Bob Evans across the street-
Yeah I saw that, I mean are there any other restaurants around?
Well, there's an Crackerbarrel in town and a something-else, meaning a 3 mile ride in now cold mist with a nice scotch waiting patiently for me in the room.
Aren't all of those just the same restaurant?
Yeah, I guess
As it turns out there are lots of other restaurants in Huntington, unmentioned by the clerk, but I decide on the, oh, let's just do the Bob Evans...
So, I ride down the hill to the BE and am greeted warmly, look at the menu and now knowing my way around the menu I opt for a repeat of the Chicken Parmesan (for 7.99)
Ashley, a young pert cute bubbly coed with fair complexion and auburn hair is my server. I order. Unsweet tea and Caesar for the salad.
Shortly after ordering the salad arrives and a short time after that Ashley stops by to see how everything is "tasting."
Fine
My Chicken P arrives and again shortly after, Ashley stops by to see how things are "tasting."
Still fine.
Did you save room for dessert?
No, thanks, and then with a big "pie" eating grin,
Can I ask you a question?
Ashley says sure and all sorts of questions run through my mind but I settle on this one.
Why do the servers at Bob Evans ask how "everything is 'tasting'?"
Huh?
You came by a few times and asked how were things "tasting," and I just thought that was an odd sort of way to ask?
Well, you've really thought about this, she offers.
I grin and say I have a lot of time on my hands, but that this is the second BE I've visited and in each one all of the servers asked the same question the same way and I wondered if during orientation to All-Things-Bob you were instructed to ask that question that way to distinguish the Bob Evans Dining Experience from all others.
That is so cool that you've actually thought about all this, really thought about it, Ashley opines and I am beginning to feel somewhat smaller and smaller that I have actually thought about this.
But, Ashley was very serious. She said when she was oriented it was by an older woman who asked how things were tasting and she just said it too.
So, when you're at home, Ashley, and your family is, are you from around here (yes), sitting around for Sunday dinner (she nods knowingly), do people say how are those potatoes "tasting" or just how are the potatoes? She thinks for just a second too long and then says she really doesn't know.
She again says how impressed she is that I have actually asked this question and I was really ready to go on to a discussion of cold fusion or retinitis pigmentosa or methane lakes on Titan, but realized I had hit paydirt with tasting, so didn't.
So, now when you ask anyone how things are tasting, you will think of this discussion, I said with a (probably stupid) grin. Ashley laughed and agreed.
I wondered if in your orientation they instructed-Did you ever see the movie "Office Space?"
Oh, I love that movie!
Yes, it was funny, but remember Jennifer Anniston's character and she worked at that resaturant?
Yes!
And she got into trouble for not being cheery enough and not wearing enough "flair?"
Yes!
Tasting is like that! Like Corporate-Speak.
Oh, no! I hate that!
Yeah Kind of.
And Ashley laughed some more. She was very pretty in a girl next door (who works at Bob Evans after school) kind of way.
I tipped her 30%
Huntington was memorable for that, so thanks Ashley.
The next morning I headed to Veterans Memorial Park on the Ohio River batture.
And then departed Huntington for Highway 10 south and then 16, two wonderful roads with sweepers, twisties and elevation changes aplenty.
On 16 very near the Virginia border I had my only mishap of the trip. I pull into a gas station and when exiting I had to make a U turn, not realizing or seeing the the road slanted off steeply away from me. She went over and broke the brake lever leaving a workable stub and sticking a sharp pin into the balloon of my misplaced pride. A couple of people helped me right her and pull her off the road. And shortly after I was again on my way.
16 in Virgina is great also. Lots of fun. I stopped in Atkins, Virginia for the evening and if you are there there is a Mom and Pop restaurant in a gas station's "mart" just across the street from the Comfort Inn that was pretty cheap and pretty good home cooking.
The next morning frost was everywhere, but it was actually VERY SUNNY for the first time. I took 16, 76 and 58 into Tn and it was a gorgeous ride, one of the best on the whole trip.
The roads in Tennessee was just fine also, though not as "intimate" as those in Virgina, West Virginia and Ohio.
and is it a good thing that people are more than willing to share intimate details of their lives in such a public place? Is it cute, Americana, whatever?
