Changing colors

Post by daveyator »

Any comments on how hard it would be to "change colors". I like the new barritz blue. It seems like all you would have to do is buy a tank, front fender, and the piece around the seat. I know you could just have it painted but that never seems to come out quite as good as coming that way in the first place. Plus I actually like the "stock" look. Wondering about tank emblems, decals and all that. I not vain enough to trade this one in just to get a blue one although a few guys I know do that sort of thing. One guy I know actually has like 5 goldwings due to wanting the newest color.
I finally got got an RT!

The list price for the 4 painted parts is about $2500, to which you would have to add or transfer all the parts attached to the tank. Tank emblems and decals are available.

I bet a very good paint shop could use the color code numbers and do a great job for far less than buying all the parts. And there is always rattle can options too  That blue does looks good on her.

I think the factory paint jobs aren't that great. If you can find a good painter, he or she could easily surpass it. My bike has too much orange peel in the finish. I had a Harley about twelve years ago and the finish on it was flawless and smooth as glass. I guess BMW decided to focus their attention on other aspects of the bike.

I had my tank resprayed after fixing a dent :( , and the guy who did it for me got a local graphics shop to make copies, he gave them the tank before he fixed the dent and they copied it and perfect, and a lot cheaper

One of my old bikes an 82 R100RS was black and you could wax and shine that paint job up alot better than you can with this new bike. I have always wondered if it it was due to the water soluable paint they now use. It could also be that black is just a better color for shining although I have yet to see a new black tank that compares with that old one.

A little while back I was looking at trading my 2007 in on a new bike in Biarritz blue - turns out we are not getting the blue in South Africa but the dealer who handles cars as well has their own panel / paint shop and offered to change the Granite gray to the Biarritz blue for R:2500.00 which equates to around $:280.00 - Im sure you guys in the USA must be able to do the same.

The older machines used Lacquer, then two step Acrylic enamal, The water borne paints they use now are still two step but softer material, so they just don't shine like the old stuff.

I was also lusting after the Biaritz Blue...I assume we'd have to buy the paint from BMW? If it's really less than US$350 I'd totally think about it. Would that affect the resale value at all?

Just checked colorrite.com they have a quart of BMW Biarritz Blue for US $189. A pint for $119 ..How much would it take for the tank and other painted body parts? I assume that painting price would not include cost of paint or would it?

If the bike gets repainted why not pick your own color and do something custom?
It might take a month to find the right color and you might appreciate having a one of a kind R.
