Another Windshield Question

I keep reading posts referencing a "fly screen". Is that the same as the BMW Sport Screen? BMW's accessories website lists, for the R1150R, the "Speedster", "Sport", "Touring" and "High Windshield 380mm" screens; I don't see anything labled "flyscreen".

Fly screen is the littlest one, which I think is the Speedster screen, by process of elimination.

The speedster is the flyscreen.

I went with a 14 " Cee Bailey with 10 mm spacers on the top mounts to move it forward.

So did you just put the spacers between the windshield and the mounting bracket?
Where did you get 10mm spacers?
Also, do you have to loosen the screws on the lower mounts to accommodate the change of angle? Otherwise, aren't you stressing the lower screws and mounts or the screen by bending it back at a different angle?

I bought plastic spacers out of a bin at a hardware store and longer bolts for the mounts. I just played with the setup until everything felt decent. Went about 4,000 miles with that setup before it was wrecked. It's been almost two years now, I'm going from a dim memory remember .

This is the clear version of the Sport Screen I used to have. The Touring Screen uses the same brackets, only a bigger screen.



This is what I use, the Speedster, AKA the Flyscreen. Different bracket system. Mine is painted flat black on the inside.



Used it for 700 miles days, all day rain riding and no problem. Easier on me than a bigger one blasting my head with turbulance or an even bigger barn door making making my beautiful bike ugly! YMMV.

Your bike IS beautiful, but not perfect. I know it has a scratch somewhere in the rear, where some yokel ran into the back of you and knocked you over.

I've noticed over the years that this windshield choice is about as subjective as "what's your favorite color?" There are just too many variables in personal tastes and the actual dynamics of windflow over a particular piece of plastic...with or without barbacks...with a Shoei fullface or a fli-up helmet, and the list goes on.

There is absolutely NO WAY for me to recommend to anyone, the shield I use. It will not work for ANYONE else in the SAME way it works for me.

But I DO use the BMW touring shield because it was bought with a big scratch on one side from the previous owner's spill...and it only cost me $45. Not only did I get a nice windbreaker for my bike, I can tell everyone the tale of how I low-sided over Monarch Pass Colorado and survived with only that there scratch on my windshield!

Phil - notice I didn't take the pictures from the rear. Never did get the number of that clown that hit me!

And you are right, discussing windscreens is worse that 'boxers or briefs" (Note the 'boxer' reference!) Too many variables, too many choices and too many much variation in what folks want.

Exactly, too may choices/variables, especially for what is sold as a naked bike. I might have quibbles with other design issues (clutch slave/spline), but I think BMW designed this motorcycle well as a unfaired machine. However, in my fruitless quest for a still air pocket, I did notice that standard garden hose washers match the OEM mounts,

and can be used to angle a windscreen slightly higher. It really does make a difference in the air flow. But, sorry to belabor the point, not enough for me to keep the thing in my face. And I mean that literally, if I did not have barbacks, I think my face shield would be bouncing against the top of the CeeBailey screen. My collection, CeeBailey, National Cycle, OEM Sport screen, plus several feet of Saeng edging, and a Laminar lip, all will rot in my garage until I get around to selling them.

I just recently played with my 380mm bmw screen. Might make some of you engineering types cringe, but I'm just a redneck engineer. I used a 1/2" drill and made new holes below and outside the original top holes. Bent the brackets to match the new holes and this raised the height and steepened the angle of the screen. The bothersome low frequency rumble at high speed in my helmet is greatly diminished. There is still wind noise but it is higher frequency which is more easily attenuated with ear plugs. I never got much buffeting but sometimes the low frequency booming got annoying. Above the screen is more turbulent now, but at only 5'8" I don't get too far above the screen in my normal riding position slightly crouched forward. Air still spills over the screen onto my helmet, but it is low energy and not the accelerated wind blast that I used to have. At lower speeds I tend to sit up more but below 70 mph the buffeting is insignificant. I am eager to ride in the rain and judge how the rain protection is affected, it was great before modifcation.
