First ride out on my R1200R in beautiful Derbyshire, England

Post by Rocket »

First ride out on the 1200R had to be on the wonderful roads of the Peak District, close to home.

Set off from Derby towards Duffield, then B5023 north to Wirksworth. Turned left at the town square onto a lovely unclassified road which rises up out of the town and eventually joins the B5035 to Carsington. Pretty "minor" road and good view from the top of the hill.

Image

Then onto Carsington Reservoir. For those that don't know, it is Severn Trent's premier visitor centre. Opened by the Queen in 1992. It's Britains 9th largest reservoir, holds 7 billion gallons, serves 3 million people a day in Notts , Derbys & Leics. It is 300mtrs above sea level (hence good for sailing) , 31mtrs deep (7 double-decker buses) and has an 8 mile walking/cycling track around it's shore (good for a day out with the family).
I learned to sail here and raced dingies and yachts for a few years, until I got fed up of the unreliable weather

Image

Then went onto Brassington village, just north of Carsington. Love this little limestone village perched ona hillside. If I could afford a weekend retreat , this would be the place. Quiet village with quaint cottages, 2 pubs, great views , lovely walks and away from the crowds.
This'll do

Image

Rode north out out Brassington to Longcliffe then took a left onto the lovely B5056 to Fenny Bentley
Some of the scenery

Image

Just north of the hamlet turned left off the A515 and headed for Thorpe and Dovedale. Love the view you get as you cross over the cattle grid and ride down into the valley towards ILam. Second phot is beginning of Dovedale viewed form the road (Doesn't do it justice)

Image
Image

After a couple of phots, then headed back to the A515 for a quick blast north for a few miles. Great road this.

Image

Turned around after a while and did it in reverse. Called in at Tissington Village to see the glorious Well Dressings. Sadly, I was a day early. It starts tomorrow :?

Image

5 wells in this village. Its one of the few privately -owned villages in the country. Owned by the Fitzherberts (for the last 8 generations) . No sign of the credit crunch outside the 17th centrury Jacobean Mansion. Can be booked for Corporate events. Fancy a club night here?

Image

One of the 5 wells. Tutted at the woman with the horse spoiling my photo, acting as if she owned the place........then watched her walk into the Mansion.... Seems she does!

Image

Then home via Ashbourne and the pretty A517 (to Belper). Got caught in the rain at Duffield. Not nice having water roll down into the boots. :( but didn't spoil the fun. Glad I was almost home though.

Still looked clean, despite the rain

Image

So a quick wash was needed before putting the new toy to bed.

Image

Bike was fabulous to ride.
Likes:
- handling
- comfortable, relaxed, upright riding positon
- torquey motor
- looks (didnt look out of place next to Tissington Hall) 8)
- economy

Dislikes (minor gripes only):
- screen creates a fair bit of wind noise at high speed
- indicators caused a little confusion , but guess I 'll get used to them

Was out for about 3 hours. A few stops and slow-ish roads so only did 70 miles. OBC recorded 52Mpg.

Good start. Pleased with the purchase.

Used 10 mega pixel Lumix camera, it brought out good light and colour in the shots today (and it was a dull afternoon!) Derbyshire really does look like that, but we're fortunate, ...the English countryside is lush late Spring (one of the compensations of regular rain).

Congratulations on the purchase and wonderful photos. Looks as if you've got some nice, silent roads around Derbyshire.

Nice shots and and a sharp-looking bike, but please be careful, for it appears that you are riding on the wrong side of the roadway and this will surely come to an ill end.

Plenty of interesting roads and POI's in Derbyshire. Intend to do as many as I can in the weeks ahead. Will take the camera with me. ;)

Thanks for the warning. As you know, it's a major problem over here. Amazing how there aren't more accidents :!:

You laugh. I was in Aberdeen for a job interview and had had a couple at the pub. I was merrily taking a leisurely drive back to my hotel when, rounding a curve, I came upon one of youse guys on MY side of the road! Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the relatively slow speed collisiom. His car had to be towed. I was able to pull my driverside front fender away from the wheel sufficiently to drive away. The judge was not amused. She made it clear that it simply was not on for us Americans to come over to HER country and think we could dictate local customs to our liking. The fine was 50 pounds. My Scottish friends said I got off lightly.

I would be scared to death riding motorcycle in the UK.

Great shots of the countryside. I'm happy to see the success of your photography. I just purchased a Lumix and looking forward to an outing on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. Seems I should be able to get some colorful pictures with this camera.

Bruce,

LUMIX have good reviews. My actual model is Panasonic LUMIX DMC-F55. Has wide -angle lens. Cracking little camera.
You will be able to use the wide-angle lens to good effect on you trip. Look forward to the phots.

That is one cool bike you have there and you're lucky to have some beautiful country roads to ride it on.

Enjoy!

Living in Oz ,I would respectfully suggest he's on the correct side of the road. And besides the 1200r does better on the left as the exhaust is on the left.Well known fact ...truly ruly.

Thanks for the support. Knew I had seen others doing the same as me - remember now, it was when I was in Sydney a few years back. Felt so much like home,... only with better weather.

Second ride out tonight (Friday) to test new tank bag. Overcast weather with the odd shower, but mostly dry.
Covered 58 miles around the Derbyshire country lanes. OBC recorded av 35 mph and 55mpg!!

Destination was Haddon Hall stately home near Bakewell ,
Took a few photos (with old camera) but quality and content not so good.
