When I bought my used R1200R a little while ago it only came with one key. I called the original selling dealer to see if they had it since I understand some dealers retain one of the keys. They told me no but that I might be eligible for a free "warranty key" and after verifying the VIN said I could get it but it might be better if I went through my local dealer. I spoke to the local dealer and they were familiar with the terminology and the procedure. First I had to register the bike and provide them with a copy of the registration in my name. Of course they needed the VIN. I just picked up the key earlier today, completely free to me. It's a normal metal key. So if you only received a single metal key and want a second one it looks like BMW will provide it as a courtesy warranty claim.
Maybe this is old news but it made my day a little more cheerful.

Re: Got the so called "warranty key" today
I had a talk with my dealer last week about the "Warranty Key" - and he went to the trouble to look up the BMW SIB on it (Service Info Bulletin). The Warranty Key only applies to 2008 bikes and newer - and VERY specifically excludes 2007 bikes. Maybe if enough of us 2007 owners bitched to BMW-NA about this they might expand it (the dealer thought that was the way to go.. squeaking wheel and all that..)

Is there some sort of organized squeaking we could do? I bought a 2nd key when I bought the bike but if the "Johnney come latelys" are getting a free key I'd like one too.

Re: Got the so called "warranty key" today
Thanks for the info guys...I bought my 2008 in Hollywood ....You know this part of Los Angeles where everybody only APPEAR...
I said ONLY APPEAR ! to be smart, successful and super-mega wealthy.
So ! one of my favorite sport with those peoples is too regularly show up and ask very politely to put them at work for something I am in right to get for FREE or make them re-do something that they messed up the first time etc etc etc...
I know...I am baaad but beside buying my bike there my relation with those peoples has not extended further than free services.
Also...I am bit annoyed to notice that the ignitor is constantly collecting sand, dust and dirt in Los Angeles..do you know gadget to protect this part even when the key is on ?

My 2007 only came with one metal key but my 2009 came with two. I guess enough people complained and BMW got the message.
