Just looked at a 2002 R1150R

Post by hjsbmw »

Okay, so I just looked at an '02 R1150R, no ABS, very clean, 26k miles, rides well. The tires, especially the front one, are the only not so good part I saw (not counting the ugly foam rubber grips, but let's not be so picky).
However, it has the low seat, and that is not my seat height. Two questions: what's your opinion on paying $6k, and how much is a high seat? Would I have to replace both seat parts or only the driver portion?
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the price might be a bit on the high side, depending on whether it has any farkles or not. The front seat can be replaced alone. But most of us have an aftermarket seat. The stock seats, for most people are not good for long rides. If you get the bike look for aftermarket seats here, on BMWMOA, even Ebay. That is where I got mine, at less then half price! Good luck.

Might be a tad on the high side but certainly, everything is relative. To add a little perspective, I paid 4500 for my 02 with 9k miles just about a year ago. Bike was completely stock and clean as a whistle. It needs to be factored in though, that my seller was in a little bit of a financial pickle and was looking for a quick sale. I've since seen similar bikes in the mid 5's, where I would probably price mine if I were to sell.

Also, check ebay... there always seems to be a seat or 2 there for reasonable money.

You didn't mention anything about accessories like system cases, or ABS, which might make a difference, but I think your seller is asking too much. For some perspective consider that the bike is seven years old and cost right at $10k new. I see the low seat going for $50 on here sometimes, so you might be paying around $100 for the taller seat as it's less common.
I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.

I agree with Mikecam...$4500 would be a go. But give us more info on the extras (side bags, windscreen, etc.)

Overall though, for $4500 and only 26k you'll have yourself a bike for life. I'm at 63k on mine and she's purring like a beast. Keep in mind you will need to upgrade the shocks fairly soon (at 30k). I just bought some for mine and from what I understand Ohlins is not making shocks for the R1150R any more. But give Mitch a call in Boise and he'll fill you in:

http://www.mitchsmotorcycles.com/ohlins.htm

As for the seat, I'm using the stock seat and have spent up to 18 hours on it with no problems. But I'm an endurance mountain biker so the seat on my R is mighty comfy compared to my moutain bike.

Well, I didn't mention extras because there really aren't any I thought worth mentioning. It has a tall windshield. Otherwise no ABS, no bags. The grips are non-OEM and ugly.
$4500 is, I believe, the trade-in value that KBB lists.

$6K is too high; I paid $6800 for an '02 in '06 with cases, heated grips, windscreen (not installed), Fallert fairing and bags.
Offer the seller something less than the $4500 that MikeCam said & go up to that much.

I couldn't sell my 04 for 6k right now if I wanted to. If 4500 is the KBB price, expect to pay a little more from a private seller, but don't give him/her anything over 5k, and that's pushing it, especially if it needs a tire or both.

Trade-In Value is less then what a dealer will pay for the used bike.
3 Months ago I paid Trade-In Value price for the 2006 K1200 LT with over a grand worth of toys on it.
And bike had less than 12K with brand new tires, new battery and 12k service done.
It is a buyers market today. =D> =D> =D>

Mike Cam is right on the money.

P.S. I would not buy a BMW bike, or any other bike, without an ABS. [-( [-( [-(

Good Luck.

Just for comp purposes........I just purchased a 2002 r1150r with ABS, side and top bags, two windshields, brand new rubber, in great shape, well cared for (with service records) - only drawback is that miles are a bit high at 39k ....for $5,600.

Here is another bike with over $1000.00 worth of toys for the price very close to Trade-In Value.

cycl2day. I would not worry about 39K. At least this bike was not sitting in the hot garage with dried out seals and corroded gas tank.
Bike with 39K just about now starting to run well. = ;) ;) ;)
Somebody broke it in for you, for free.
Enjoy the bike, you did well. =D> =D> =D>

Thanks for all your input. The owner insists on $6k and so I have to walk away.

Tictac50 - thanks for the reality check on my 39k miles. And I can't help myself, after my first two tanks I must write this - this bike is unbelievable - a magnificent combination of muscle and tecnology but instead of waking the neighbors, it purrs like a kitten. What a GREAT ride!!

Cycl2day you've just had that same epiphany that I had after buying my Rock...well guess what's in my garage tonight? My brother just sold his CBR and picked up an '04 Roadster ABS, decked out very nicely with only 15k miles :D Welcome to the fold!

Another comp perspective... just saw listed on Boston CL an '04 1150R with 50k miles and a few add-ons at $4,800.

Keep looking for sure. There are a lot of great deals on the market right now. Like Beaze said I just got an 04 roadster for 6500. It has:

Wunderlich engine gaurd
PIAA lights
Wind screen
BMW system cases
heated grips
ABS
Givi mount, rack, and Mono key top case
BMW Cylinder gaurds
15k miles

Just sold my Honda CBR600RR and don't regret it at all. My wife told me that the only condition was that I take her on some REAL rides now that we have the R bike! She said not like around town, lets actually go somewhere! Keep up the search and you will find your "deal of a lifetime".
