Well I have managed to get my hands on a nice R850r. Due to fly down and pick it up next week.
Although this bike won't need much doing to it one thing I DO want to do is take out the catalytic converter element. I did this on mt 1100RT and it made several improvements to how the bike ran.
Has anyone else done this and where exactly is the cat element located in the exhaust box? This is a 1997 bike.
I thought there might be a different layout on the 850.
Well to start with, cats are not a legal requirement here in New Zealand. When I removed the cat from the RT I noticed:
easier starting and smoother idle. The engine ran freer and did not labour as easily going up a hill. It went a little better and I got better gas mileage and the dreaded "surge" mostly disappeared
yeah, the cat is hiding in that big bulky block right before your rear tire. Same in the RT/R/GS and so on. Here in Germany the situation is different as any modification which leads to increased power, greater pollution, vehicle safety and so on needs to be approved and entered in the registration certificate ...
