Y-piece (TANK REMOVAL?)

Post by tommy »

Hi guys,

I know this should probably be in aftermarket accessories but considering the last post there was Dec. '07 i didn't think it would get enough coverage there.

I'm wondering.. looking at the Hayne's Manual, it tells me if i take the catalyser off, to unscrew the O2 sensor, and to do that the petrol tank needs taking off to free-up the wiring and give it some slack to turn (i guess so the wire isn't damaged)..

..is this advice a step too far in terms of the wire's safety? or does the tank actually need to be removed to unscrew the O2 sensor?

your experience will be greatly appreciated.

while i really want the Y-piece for my bike, i dont want to be removing the tank by myself, and i really dont want to pay another £100 ish to have it done professionally..

Thanks,

Tom

I replaced the Cat with a Y-pipe a few months ago and did not remove the tank. I broke the O sensor loose and the dropped the cat. I unscrewed the O sensor by turning the cat. Assembly was the reverse. Also taking the tank off is very straight forward. A little harder then doing the valves but still easy even for a novice. Go slowly and don't use any force.

Where are you Tommy?

If you're South East come over to my place (W.Sussex) one weekend and I'll do it for you/show you how to do it. :) I've done it before and can setup the O2 sensor connection so you can undo it again later (if you need to put the cat back on) without taking the tank off - that's how my bike is set up. :)

Hi Riceburner,

I'm located in Nottingham some 300 miles away, however i could do with a long ride and so could the bike! when i next get the chance to come down it'd be great to take you up on your offer

..as for the y-piece.. i havn't actually bought it yet, spent too much this month on other bits and pieces, so hope to have it by the end of december/start of january..

if i don't manage to fit it myself it'd be really helpful if i could come down for the day and get your help/experience with it.

should the bike have any trouble being MOT'd with the y-piece and remus-revo can installed?

Also noticed you ride 400's! AWESOME! I used to own a VFR 400 NC30, then RVF 400 NC35 while insurance was too much for anything bigger! great bikes!

Thanks again,

Tommy

I can't remember if I had a Remus on my bike at MOT time - but it's very easy to sling the OE can on to get it through the MOT. Having said that - I was told that the Remus Y-piece and can with the baffle in "should" be road-legal. My bike currently wears a standard cat and the Remus can. (mainly because the mount-plate welds on the Y-piece broke).

I had a ZXR400 for about 12 years - taught me most of what I know. :D
